Hawaii beach break information

Postby Margann » Mon Aug 09, 2004 5:18 am

My husband and I are intermediate
surfers....actually I am more on the less advanced end of
intermediate...anyhow, we are planning the honeymoon we couldn't afford when we got married (and still can't quite but what the hey) and are seeking a spot in the Hawaiian islands where we can hang out, have a consistent beach break and not too many people....do you have any suggestions for us? It would be an added bonus if there is a big wave site nearby where we can
watch. Thanks for your time!

Margann - what a coincidence - we are exactly about to do the same thing. Its relatively cheap to travel to Hawaii right now, plus I've got some time off between jobs. Let me know if you hear of anything? I was looking at Maui, because we didn't want to go to the Big Island (busy, noisy, crowded). I heard that in the winter the south sides of the islands get the biggest waves, and in the winter the north shores are where its at.

We are complete beginners unlike yourselves, although we whitewater kayak and snowboard so hopefully some of this will help the learning curve.

there are several books out that list the well know spots.

last time i was out there, i spent a week in maui and a week in kauai. on maui, i mainly surfed around lahaina boat harbor. reef/sand combo that's a little shallow, but not too bad. once i went out to the se side and surfed ohana (?, think that's the name). probably not the best move for standup surfing. nice left off a point, with one minor drawback: 8 out of 10 waves were macking closeouts into almost dry sand (talk about shore pound). that place was all about wave selection and kickout timing.

on kauai, i surfed a break near poipu. i think the name of it was 'the bowl' around the prince kuhio area. it's a little south facing bay with a left on the east side, an A frame in the middle and a right on the west side. all reef, but not bad. the toughest part is the paddle out where it can get shallow in the bay (but well inside of the break)

enjoy, they're obviously summer spots since they all face south. and never got any local stinkeye at those breaks

for big wave spots, in the summer check out 'infinities' on Kauai. it's a little tough to describe directions, but if you find it and decide to paddle out, headsup: it's a relatively local spot. if you're there in the winter, check out jaws and honolua bay on maui...although it'll be tough to watch the action at jaws since it's about 1/2 mi. offshore.

hope it helps

I hope I am not posting this too late. My number one suggestion is definitely Turtle Bay Resort. This resort is the hotel that the tv series "North Shore" is set at and its kind of close to all the major surf spots like pipeline and sunset beach. The best part about it is that theres a break right next to the hotel and its a jetty break because the hotel is on a jetty. This break is only a right however I seen the girls surfing it on the asp tour I think and depending on the time of year it can be from 2-20 ft. in the summer it would probably be down. theres also the hans hedeman surf school within the hotel where I think you can rent boards and lessons if you like. on top of that the hotel scenery is just beautiful. you can ride horses, theres a safe lagoon that hotel guests usually snorkel in or just sit on the beach and its adjacent to the turtle bay golf course, which is supposed to be pretty good. I never actually stayed in the hotel but I have visited it and its pretty nice if you like the ocean. A honeymoon would be great there. Theres also four or five different places where you can get married at the hotel I heard. I dont work for the hotel or anything but I think that would be the best place for what you are looking for. Hope this helped a lot. (go to their website if they have one, you should find a lot of info there)
