Does anyone know where the 'Hang Loose/Shaka' hand sign comes from, its history? (not the meaning of it which I already know)

I've heard it was a sign California surfers driving VW were doing when they passed one another (surfer)VW on the road, in the 60/70's when the aircooled engine was popular among surfers...
