I saw a DVD a while ago (cant remember name tho Unsalted rings a bell) and they had some quality waves. Good DVD well worth watching, must be strange not having the salty taste whilst surfing tho.

Surfing in the Great Lakes is "Great".
Check this out!

I'm new to surfing and should be catching my first wave any time now!

BTW- Yes, "Unsalted" is the title of the DVD.

Does anyone have any actual pictures?

There is a lot of speculation about it..and maybe some sold photo's might settle it.

Take this all of you fancy shmancy ocean surfers...I live on the great lakes...you can almost surf year round...except for the ice in the middle of the winter. That is when we cut wholes in it, and go scuba diving.
There is a reason you can get drysuits made for surfing.

Only the hardcore go out surfing in the snow.

WOW, That looks as cold as the North Sea in February. Not sure of the size of these lakes, but the North Sea and English Channel aren't huge expanses of water, and we get a lot of localised windwaves which is what i presume these are.

Don't forget that the Great Lakes are significantly large bodies of water - hundreds of miles across and therefore able to have fairly large fetch areas to build up waves.

The more significant part is that because of the surrounding land, weather is much more unpredictable - the Great Lakes challenges many dangerous ocean shipping areas for number of shipwrecks. 'Lake effect' weather spawns blizzards that just suddenly pop up out of nowhere and dump 3 feet of snow at a time in the New England area.

It's widely appreciated in the shipping industry that the Great Lakes can be a fairly dangerous place in comparison to open water in the ocean.
