My next board is going to be a fun shape. I'm getting this board for day's that I just feel like cruising and on the day's my wife would like to learn. I have been surfing since I was 7 and i'm 21 now. If i'm out on my funshape and someone drops in on me and calls me a cook cause i'm on a fun shape i'm going to wait for then on the beach or just paddle straight over to them and show them kook right across there jaw.

Let the begginers begin and the land locked have there fun. If they drop in on you are do something wrong that will piss off the most arrogent just tell them what they did wrong and see if they accept. If they don't then that's where the kook comes in and where you and your buddies never let him have another wave the rest of the day.

We call them Bennys..... Bayonne, New Jersey(north jersey, by new york..like where the sopranos where filmed) Elizabeth,nj(industrial, dirty town up north)Newark,nj(anothr city up north) New York(kook central)

from the early 70's to mid 90's there were busses to asbury park(awesome break, its also home, but some areas are kinda ghetto, major history there...center of the jersey shore scene, bruce springsteen started out here) anyways the bus passed through these exact locations

I'm Still a beginner and Ive been learning in Florida
Jupiter, PSL, Ft.Pierce...ect. My very first board is a 6'3
I got it used at some surf shop....It's very difficult to learn on, however
I learn quickly! I can paddle the board, catch waves, but standing up has been difficult, paddling past the break is also hard, but I bought a funboard
because everyone told me thats what I needed to learn. now that I have been using a 6/3 for my first 4 months and switching the 6'10 funboard has made a hudge difference.

Everyone Ive met on the beach has been pretty cool, and cheer you on when you get a wave, but the the first person who calls me a kook or any other name is going to get thier attitude adjusted! I WILL wait on the beach for that person! I respect people at the beach and I expect to be respected back. I look for no trouble wherever I go, One thing I cant stand is surfer assholes

I love surfing, it's great fun, but these conceeded people need a serios head check! I also have names for people that yell KOOK!

No i don't think you are..,I think the people that are wannabe surfers are the stuck-up rich people that buy a 5'10 Al Merrick Shortboard as their first surf board and then go in their brand new range rover to Polzeath and walk about the beach with it yet don't actually surf it. I saw this one guy down in the south-west of france that bought this very board the day he got there, didn't even wax it up, and went onto the beach and didn't even take it in the sea until a local went and asked if he surfed. He said yes and the local asked him to prove it. So he went into the sea and tried to surf it (still waxless~!!) and snapped the nose off on a shore dump. Now thats what i call a wannabe surfer....what a muppet!!

oh man...i love merricks..perfect weight in perfect places. Itl set you back a clean 500 bones..

I ride a 7'0 pig fish...ive been surfing my whole life and am one of the top surfers at my local break..i surf all year round...i pretty much surf everyday...when the school year starts i surf a few hours before..basically i surf alot and am no beginner..i ride a fun-shape-like board...i also ride a 6'1, 6'2"rocket fish,6'8" mini-gun...those are my main boards that i hold onto...i also go through about 2 other boards that ill trade in, buy used, then sell for a new one and so on...right now those consist of a 5'10 bronzer fish and a 5'10 shortboardw/ swallow tail.

As you can see fish boards realy struck my interest this year.

Postby michaeldl » Sun Aug 08, 2004 8:26 pm

look I learned on a short board at about 22 let me tell ya during the winter of el ninio that year I must a got yolked about three million times and to make matters worse the damm nose was broke off needless to say those poor basterds at the break had to put up with my sorry bt all winter but by spring I was husseling there sorry buts on the break for double over sets what I am saying is that if ya pay your dues that is paddel your brains out and get clocked held down and scared senceless ya might have a chance but if ya stay on the foamies you will probobly end up like most of those I see on them going nowhere so shoot that thing full of holes and buy a new board. If ya wanna surf ya gotta pay dues

I totally, absolutely, and radically agree with you Michaeldl.
My first ever board was a 7'10'' NSP, and I basically learnt all I could on that board, but these sorta boards have limits, and if you wanna progress, youve gotta move on or you'l be stuck in the same routine over and over again.
After about 7 months on the NSP, I accompanied my brother to Tunnel Vision surf shop, to pick up his board. One line particularly stays in my mind of which the owner Andy said '' If you want to ride this board, you will ride it. It takes dedication, but as long as youve got it, you'l master it''
How true did I find what he said.
That was it after that, I broke the routine and ordered my 6'6'' shortboard, which im having amazing fun on.
Aaawww what a lurrrveely story guys!!
Its totally off topic, I know, but I just had to agree with michaeldl.

'Kooks' grrr, silly people who talk the talk and wear the clothes just cause they can. Gotta feel sorry for them really guys, they just want a piece of the lifestyle, and heck who can blame them, its a pretty rawkin' one!

Anybody ever got any abuse from the kooks before??!

Hang Loose!

kooks

Postby michaeldl » Mon Aug 09, 2004 10:38 pm

gues what brah ?me. I paid a huge penalty for a bad decision .like I tried going to hawaii like a dreamer thinking that if I went there with my heart open and willing to try to understand and respect there culture the things would work out, but for a white guy on the rock with no connections life was pretty damm hard .There aint no free rides there in fact if you can't pay and pay through the nose your gonna. anyway to make a long story short and not blame all hawainians for racisim and crulety cause there were plenty that made my time on the rock bearable .I got my jaw broke asking for a ride.Thing is that was the only day I left to go to town without my mashaitie. So dude got to run away. Which he did as soon as he cracked me.[ cowards are typicaly like that.] Soon after that I flew out.beleve me I got every reason in the world to hate them but as time passed my hate changed .now I find hawaians on my rock and I try to work with them .cause I see there struggle life aint easy. cause there were plenty before us to screw things up and all we can do is try to make up for there mistakes . Those were there mistakes not ours which must be explained, to the ignorant like dude if america did not seize control of your island this world would be under axis control. guess what ?you would not have fit the profile. sorry that I do but I never tried to enslave your sorry butts . I did not through your queen from power, and I did not bring violence to your door. They also should realize that violence begets violence the more ya put in the more ya get out.I grew up with guns and innercity mentality I could easly put the blade to you and felt justified.
Eye for and eye right . On my rock guns are easy to come by and hatetred easy to weild ,Could have pushed it right back on the people that wronged me.That is not the way{you know this man!} If your a kook and you don't realize this you will get it soon enough.

I see your BENNY and raise you a SHOOBIE. It's ok, summer here in the states is almost over and soon all the tourists will go home.

I've heard Benny defined as Bergen, Essex, Newark, and NewYork guess there is a little play there. Although I have to say that I like the "plastic surfer" , never heard that before... Hey look, there's a plastic surfer... yep, good stuff.

Un-talented wannabes

Postby Easyrider » Sat Aug 14, 2004 11:24 am

Hows about "fakers"? Boring, I know, but after all that is what those loons are doing. Hey, I like the "plastic surfers" idea! "Airheads"? "Faux pas"?

So what is the difference between a beginner and a wannabe? I want to learn to surf really bad, but I can't drive, have no money, etc., etc. I've been studying and practicing on an ironing board popping up (yeah it's still something isn't it?) So what does that make me?

i've only gone surfing onceor twice each summer since 2008, and i would definitely not pretend that i can actually surf well :S the problem is my nearest surf spot is that godawful surf reef at Bournemouth so i never get enough practise to get out of the kook stage. I do think it's important that you do it cos you love it and not cos you want to look cool and get people to think you're some kind of hippy..

You said it in your last sentence asheroth, you do it cos you love it. There's kooks of all levels of skill, and silly people who try to surf because odf fashion. Can you tell genuine beginners from kooks yes! Usually by their mouth. Can you tell kooks from good surfers yes! Usually by their mouth.

Bournemouth Council sort of qualifies as kooks too buying a surf reef with so little swell available to work the reef.
Ripaquikbong shorts and apparel do not a surfer make!
Everyone started as hapless and hopeless, remember compassion for the beginners .

You and me both, they make soft speed bumps and the woman on boards in skimpy bikinis wow, just love it when they rip... or.. when they fail to duck dive properly and get temporary topless, bless them!

EDIT: As for kooks, well, they are people who talk surfing, act surfing, but can't surf and don't want to put in the time to learn.

You can be riding a longboard for all I care, but if you have no respect for surf ettiquete like who has the right of way on a wave, dropping in on people, bailing in STUPID 2-3 foot waves REGARDLESS of people behind you etc  then go back to surf school or let one of us at our break sort ya out  yes.. I've had that happen to me, that is why I absolutely hate people like this...

Now I'm mad again  no waves for last 2 days bad weather I hate this, I want good weather and good waves, last session was on Friday and already feeling a bit twitchy and agitated :x
