San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Postby jethrodog » Thu Nov 16, 2006 4:19 pm

Been searching past posts but can't find info I am looking for. Maybe I just didn't look hard enough but any help you can give would be great.

Had our hotel in Costa Rica cancel some of our dates of our stay. We now have an extra 7 days that we don't have anything planned for. We could either find another hotel or go to a different local for those 7 days, but we have checked out most of CR and are thinking about something different. Thought of maybe driving up and crossing over into Nicaragua and checking out San Juan del Sur for those 7 days. ANybody been there? Been looking at it for 4 months, talked to some friends who have been there, we were planning on going in 2008. But would be interested in any first hand experiences that any of you have had out there. The wife is worried that she will be stuck in some out of the way place with nothing to do but surf. She surfs but isn't ready to commit all her vacation just to that.

Actually, she is just as excited about the trip as I am. SHe surfs, she's just starting. She started because I surfed and she thought it would be fun to try. Plus, then we had an excuse to go somewhere warm every year. But she only surfs for about 1 hour each day. She gets too tired as she has never really been much of a swimmer. What she is worried about is been in a place where there is nothing but surfing. SHe likes to see the towns, see the people, visit a few small shops, etc.

I just went to san juan del sur this summer. its awesome. the waves were really awesome, me and my brother had a lot of surfs by ourselves and i got a some nice tubes. we went to 4 spots, 2 of which were in a 20 minute drive of san juan del sur. it is hard to find the spots but you can ask for directions. the local surf shop can help you out. nicaraguasurfreport.com is a good site and the pics are shot at a break called maderas that is 20 minutes from san juan del sur. if u want a very nice house to rent go to the pelican eyes resort. it has really nice views of the bay and it is on a hill overlooking the city. piedrasyolas.com

we were so stoked on the trip we are going for a month next summer

Thanks. Sounds awesome. Some friends told me similar stuff but they sometimes exagerate a little  so I wanted to maybe hear some other info. My wife read your post and said it sounds great. I will show her some of the website info I have found on it and I think that we may make a trip over there in February. Thanks!!
