Sar wrote:...also, the 6 meal a day thing doesnt work for me. I love to feel full after a good meal and dont have time to plan and eat 6 meals a day. If I know Im on three meals a day and thats it Im fine, but as soon as it turns to 6 meals a day I would count a packet of crisps and an apple as a meal. Obviously thats just me trying to justify eating crap in some kind of way but if you do struggle with discipline I would recommend 3 meals a day. With a low carb diet i didnt seem to suffer the energy slumps that I would usually get between meals.

I've never heard anyone bring up 6 meals a day, but I have done 5 and it worked very well. Honestly, If you don't have the dicipline to stick with something like that, you're not going to have the dicipline to stick to any good diet. If you do it right, after the 1st day or two, you don't get hungry at all. If anything, it gets dificult to make sure you eat so often. The key is to make sure that you are timing your meals right and that you're not eating very large portions. The only full meal you should have is dinner while on this diet, and it should still be realistic portions.

I've also noticed that there is some difference of opinion on weight lifting. Some say its the anti-fat cure all, some say that you're just going to put on more weight. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. You can lift and not add bulk as long as you're doing low weight/high reps. You must also keep in mind that muscle metabolises much faster than fat, so once again you are increasing your metabolism. Just make sure that you don't get so hung up on your lifting routine that you neglect to do cardio, which (aside from diet) is the most important aspect to losing weight.

Bottom line, decrease the amount of crap you put in your body, be more active to make your body burn more than it usualy does, and you can't go wrong.

three words for you man....Yoga, Yoga, Yoga! No, seriously, a good exercise plan and balanced diet will do you wonders, but yoga is great for improving:

general fitness and cardio health
stability and balance
flexibility and suppleness
focus and concentration

all of which are needed for surfing!

it's not all about contorting yourself into odd postures and meditating...there are many different forms of yoga, and if you look into it you will find one that is right for you. Hatha yoga forms tend to be more gentle and less dynamic, which is a good intro for beginners.

I go to yoga classes occasionally (more frequently during winter) and have a DVD which I do at home. I can notice an improvement within 2 or 3 sessions...being able to stretch further, hold postures longer and with more control, breathe more easily etc.

It's also a good warm-up for on the beach before I get in the water!

If you want to be thin/fit for ever (rather than just having your weight bouncing up and down as you diet, give up, back on a diet...)

DO SOMETHING FUN.

Diets and weights are all very well, but most people lose motivation or put it back on once they've hit their target weight.

My motivation for going to the gym, swimming lengths, eating properly is more or less, roughly, give or take... zero

So I cycle everywhere (like, 30 miles a day), indoboard in front of the TV instead of sitting on the sofa, walk instead of getting the bus, go climbing instead of going to the pub. And go surfing of course

What I mean is, as well as the diet etc, once the weight is off, keep it off and stay fit by habit.

Also of course, I can eat masses and dont put on weight, or can get rid of it in a week if I need to drop a couple of pounds

I didn't do any sport for about 4 months, constant injuries and such and managed to put on 1 1/2 stone! Within the first 2 weeks of getting into surfing and running again (run 3 mile every other day 18mins each run) I lost that 1 1/2 stones, my metabalism just kicked in.

I know it sounds obivious but remember not to eat as much when you stop, because thats how I put the weight on.

I started on August 18th and as of October 18th I had gone from 200lbs down to 175lbs. I hired a nutritionist who set up an eating plan and also set me up on a work out schedule (he is also a personal trainer, bonus). I lost all the weight, 4 inches on my waist, doubled my arm size, and built my muscles way up. I attribute it to his eating plan. It was hard but I had to get rid of the weight I gained after surgery and that was the only way I could do it. It has now been a month, I am back to eating regularly and I have actually dipped down to 173lbs, haven't gained any back. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism, the easier it is for your body to lose/keep off the weight.

The average bloke ticks over with 2500 cals a day, so if you cut that down and don't do any exercise you will loose weight. If you are going to do any cardio work (run, swim etc) make sure that it lasts for over 20 mins as it takes 20 mins to start burning fat. I would advise running, but if you can try running on grass or sand as it will absorb some of the impact saving stress on your joints. I would also go swimming as its related to surfing and it'll save your ass if you get into the sh1t out in the surf!

Cut out booze!
Switch to semi/skimmed milk
Cut down on bread
Cut down on sugary foods, they raise you blood sugar levels quickly making you feel good, but drop quickly making you want to eat quicker!
Raising your metabolism will make you loose weight, so try to put a little bit of muscle on by lifting weights. To build muscle you need to be training in a reverse pyramid system;

Example - Chest press
Do warm up set 15 - 20
Lift a very heavy 4
Drop weight 6
Drop weight 8
Drop weight 10

Remember its not a comp, lift what YOU feel is heavy not what the last guy in the gym lifted!

give us a shout and let us know how your doing!

Wow, lots of contridictory information on here.

Lets start whith, weights. Great for loosing weight, though it has been covered. You want help with a plan on what to lift, and how and when? Google it, you will find alot of help on exercise sites.

Meals. 6 meals a day is best. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with snacks after each. I normaly go about 2.5 hours after. Use your head as to what is healthy food. Snacks for me will be a granola bar and a yogurt, or fresh fruit, or something like that. This will keep your metabolism running a full steam all the time.

Diets and the such. To loose weight you need to creat a calorie definciancy. DO NOT create a definciancy by eating less. You should eat more, but excercise even more. When your body goes into starving mode(ie you are not eating near enough), the first tissue to go is muscle tissue.

Alchohol, as much as possible cut it out. You will have more money, and be in way better shape. Alchohol inhibits your bodies ability to sythisize carbohydrates and proteins. So those few pints you have after football practice will make that practice worthless.

Running, I run half marathons. I dont run more then 4 times a week on my heavy weeks. Though that is just me. Running is VERY hard on your body. DO NOT run every day. Start your runs with like 3-5km runs 2-3 times a week. Preferably on dirt trails, because they are way more forgiving on your joints.

Oh and the other thing I noticed.....You lost 20 lbs in one month? I hate to say that its not a good thing to loose so fast. Most people that loose that fast gain even more then they were before. So take care with how you are now. My goal for the year is to loose 15-20lbs...I have given myself to the summer to do that. Normaly the weight you have lost should come off over the course of about a year. People are too lazy, and want to get in beach shape in one week. It takes time, do it right, and you will be healthy and fit for life....

Oh ya, and the cheat day, great idea....for all the things I do(cycle like 200-250km a week, run 20km a week), I still hit up a mcdonalds run about every 2 weeks or so. I allow myself to have one thing I am craving every week or two so the cravings dont get crazy. Plus, eating healthy all of a sudden after not eating good for so long is hard to stick to.

sorry guys, but i'm gonna take this one in a different direction.

i am 6'1, 155 lbs. and i am fookin skinny. isn't the ideal weight for a 6'1 guy somewhere around 180-190? i can practically count my ribs individually, and my elbows can be used as weapons if i so choose. i don't try to be this skinny, its just how i am. i'm not sure why you want to go down to 155, as that is just borderline 'underweight.' what's wrong with 6'1, 185? if you're worried about fat or flab, just go to the weightroom and turn it into some muscle, and you'll look what i would consider as an ideal weight.

maybe i'll start a post asking for help in GAINING 30 pounds, not losing 50 or whatever you started out as.

gaining weight is pretty much the same - weights, but eat more.

Eat above your maintenence calorie levels, that doesnt mean stuff your face with junk, eat clean carbs (pasta, brown rice etc.), and lots of good protein (fish, chicken, whey supplements). Basically plan your diet the same as you would for losing weight in terms of protein/fat, and just increase the carbs to reach your calorie target. And do heavy compound weight exercises a couple of times a week. At your weight youll gain easy at first just by doing the weights and eating.

Better idea than start loading up on calories--go lift a lot.

It's not that you have a low fat percentage, it's that you don't have muscles on top of those bones. You probably have the idea fat percentage, so that means you've got 30 lbs of muscle to pick up, which isn't too hard if you haven't been lifting previously.

how do a gain a bit of fat on my stomach????
You can see my ribs on the side, if i could just get 1 cm fatter there it would be great!
I try to eat high calorie foods but it doesnt work.
People who say theyre fat hate me when i say this.
I got operated and didnt do anything for 2 weeks besides work and i didnt get fat.
I think biking helps, go ride bmx at the skatepark, its so much more fun that just rolling around, roll around and off jumps!!

 Ya i was pretty much the same befor i started surfing i was 6.1 and wieghed exactly 140 and looked really skinny since then i have bulked up a bit and now wiegh 150 i have not an ounce of fat on me but thats mainly cause of my metobalism as i eat like a horse  lots of high protein foods helped add that 10 pounds. Ive been 150 now for about 3 months and have not added any weight but yet nothing has changed weird or what :? I think my ideal weight would be 155 but i can not add that extra 5 on no matter what i do.

If you're under 25, don't worry about being thin. You'll live longer than fatties. As you get older, you'll fill out naturally.

Still planning, but...

Postby hypersoniq » Sun Nov 19, 2006 8:11 pm

After some research I believe the BEST dieting trick is to nix all sugars (not just the obvious ones like dessert). I know several friends who visibly got in better shape JUST by cutting out sugar.

My weakness is between meal snacks. I am almost 100% positive that it's because I don't eat breakfast... so I'll have to start doing that. I'm also swearing off the midnight snacks. (I mean it this time :D )

As far as exercise goes, I want to get in shape, but I have to be a realist. 9 and 1/2 hrs. in a machine shop capped by 1 hr drive each way DOESN'T leave much energy for stopping by the gym. Besides, @38 and having been overweight for about 8 years or so, I don't want to overdo it at first. I put my body through enough strain just luggin' my fat a** around. My personal goal isn't to lose weight, it's to lose WAIST. I'll be tracking progress in inches rather than pounds.

What I need first is to regain flexibility, hoping yoga will help in that department. I just got a Balance360 balance board last week. Benn doing 10 min. a day and I plan on ramping that up to at least 1/2 hour each day next week. I need to find some good stretching exercises to build up some endurance for paddling. I want to have a "routine" in place in time for my '07 resolution.

I have yet to be on a surfboard, but we're moving to within 20 min. of the beach in 2008, so I am getting in shape NOW. Using surfing as a motivator. I'll be ordering a set of yoga tapes done up just for surfers sometime next month. Once I have a few months in with the balance board/diet/stretching/yoga then I'll be picking up a flowboard (14 wheeled skateboard for street carving practice... maybe take my kids to the skatepark ;-)

To not go into to much detail, here's the main way to lose or gain weight. Your body has something called a caloric maintenance level which is the number of calories you need to take a day in order to be healthy, not gain or lose weight. To lose weight, intake less calories than your caloric maintenance level. typcially 15 to 25 percent less the your CML is an ideal deficit. To gain, do the opposite. Decide on a goal. Do you want to build muscle, or do you want to lean(cutting)? Doing both can be done, but is very hard to do. Check out discussbodybuilding.com and learn more. The site is not just for bodybuilders, but athletes, etc.
