I never said there werent good mags out there...i find the more localy based mags are better. Surfer for instince is targeted for newbies and non-surfers....its a book of ads that sell a false image of the surfing scene

i don't know any non-surfers who actually buy surf mags. whats the point, they fully wouldn't get it. surf mags are good stoke when its been flat for days and you can't go surfing. (just cos you can't go surfing, dosn't mean you can't be thinking about it!) as for sexist ads in surfer mags, get over it, no ones forcing you to buy their products, as for how they affect your self esteem, i think they would only do that if you let them. lets face it, the people in those ads are super good looking. no one expects your bum to look like that. wear boardshorts.

I think they mean people who WANT to surf but don't yet, those and new surfers, and as it also happens, old skool landlocked surfers like myself who also visit forums like this regularly. I mean, if I were out every day catching waves, would I be here posting? I don't think so..

Im offended by every other page in surf mags

Postby guest » Thu Jul 29, 2004 5:58 pm

Don't just be offended by the pictures of thongs....be offended by the posers in the ads. I don't need to see some dude or chick standing there holding a board looking cool to buy clothes. I wanna see the product in action!

If you can show me how your product helps me, besides look cool, maybe i"ll buy it.

The last surf mag I bought I just about threw it out because of all the ads that were posing.

Reminds me of skateboard and snowboard mags too. Its funny to see a truck ad with a picture of a guy doing a board slide who rode pretty much straight to get to the rail. Or the team posing looking ghetto to sell wheels.

Sport mags suck.

Well I like the chicks in the thongs and hot models & i don't give a fukk what they are selling. Surfing is supposed be a chilled out sport so if you got problems with a stupid mag than u aren't chilled. get my point

yeah, you fully need to divorce the "image" of surfing from the reality cos they are two very different things. people who surf will realise that hot chicks lying around in g-strings isn't reality, its fantasy, and how can you find fantasy offensive? i agree with the last post. chill.

Who said surfing is supposed to be a chill sport? Ill tell you who.....Those old surfing movies and the whole beach boy scene..who act stoned all the time, have blonde hair, and lay by your board in the sun.

Surfing is what you think of it...there is no image....there is no "lingo" you dont need to call anyone a dude. Surfing is one of the least common sports ive seen....have you been in a large windswell..where your taking a giant wall off black water that doesnt stop building up and can close out anyminute..

where you can easily get sucked under for over a minute.

doesnt sound chill to me.....and an airhead "surfer" wouldnt be smart enough to keep himself out of harms way

by the way..im just voicing my opinion...i only read local mags just because the large mags dont interest me..i dont like the false image..i prefer a magazine that hits good articles

No offense Inletsurfer, but you have just completely contradicted yourself, (forgive me if i'm wrong) as you said that "Surfing is what you think of it.....there is no image.." and then at the end you say you hate it when larger surf mags portray a "false image". How can it be a false image if there is no image?!?!

To be fair, it is annoying when you do see these chicks in ads with like a full-on face of make up who looks like she's never seen the sea, let alone surfed, but I think people are looking too far into this. I mean its just a bum for gods sake! I mean, we've all seen one before so whats the big deal?!!? its hardly as if they've plonked some hardcore porno in the mag to promote surfing is it?!?!

thongs are good

Postby gulfsurfer » Mon Sep 20, 2004 2:01 am

dude thongs are good, dont be a pufter. and girls u prolly dont want to see them so flip the page, its not hard. in the ausie surf mag called tracks, the have a thing called tiddy bit each issue and its awesome. it shows the tiddies, then talks about tid bits of a surf spot, its classic. so my point is, it u dont like it, flip the page! dont bitch about it!

" LOL " .... well Dusty' i reckon that sums that up , maybe a little harsh on the language but you made your point well  .

" just to put a def' close to this subject "

" God created Butt' for the sole purpose of advertising to other chimps' ( this is well before evolution made us go 'missionary ') .. that , that is the place to aim for , for reproduction ! ...grab another chimp by its butt and (it really should be called chimp' style not doggie style' ) ...reproduce baby"

soooo ' ...for all the haters ... " i " and other chimps are only checking what has been genetically passed down since the beginning of time !!

the fact that at some point a woman decided to wrap a piece of tooth floss around it , is purely inncidental ... " therefore ... Thongs are not a way of exploiting women ,, they are there to help guide the blind chimps to the right area

Roaring off-shores actually, has been for 3weeks now. Some much so any swell coming at us here in the Bay of Plenty from the N-E is being blown to Chile.
I compensate by driving over to the west coast to Raglan in the weekends & spending two days at what is (supposidly) one of the best left-handers in the world. It's a 80 mile trip there...but worth it. Truely epic waves there...I'm talking 200plus meter rides on a very average day. They turn your knees to jelly...
What part of NZ did your family migrate to?

Curious.

The real annoying bit is that none of them surf  .. im trying like mad to get over there for a holiday ... 'lol' they wont see me for the whole time im there :D , my uncle keeps telling me of all this beautiful scenery and im just like " tell me about the sea ... yeh great trees and stuff unc' .. " sea , waves ..tides " ... yeh yeh , lovely long walks unc' .. but about the sea hehehe .
checked out your position on the map ... man' you right on the good edge yeh ?!

Carterton; small rural town about 100kms north west of our captial city(Wellington).Never been there, the whole region is known for good wine, grapes, cheeses & people who own "lifestyle blocks". Um, weekend farmers etc and it's a popular weekend escape destination for city dwellers from Wellington.
Where I live is pretty nice, although the surf is not overly consistant. The nice thing about it is being able to drive from coast to coast in just over an hour, can surf in two different oceans in one day. Not many places in the world where you can do that.

Can anybody think of anywhere else you can do this. Curious???
