WCT in Brazil?

Postby scuba steve » Tue Nov 07, 2006 5:31 pm

Just wondering for anyone who follows the asp wct why they have one of the events at nova schin in brazil compared to some other way higher quality breaks around the world?

The event going on at the moment really has'nt thrown up anything special and i think the are much better, somewhat underrated breaks around the world that really should be considered.

Does anyone know who decides at what beaches the event are held at and how they make their decision?

Any opinions/info?

Thanks :)

I enjoyed Mundaka the live streaming was great. They had a bit of everything there tho, epic 8ft barrels to one heat i watched where they had to wait 20mins into the heat for a set to arrive. Couldn't find a link for the this leg and thought it had finished now?

yeah, i know a lot of the yanks moan because they want another comp there but i like the fact they go to brazil and france, at least they get the timing right when they come to europe now so although its not a 10ft barrell over 2 inch deep reef there is at least waves usually and gives the surfers a chance to show their versatility. Theres a lot of skill in surfing smaller less perfect waves and a lot of the brazilian guys show that and compete on a fair playing field against the hawaiiand and the like over the course of the whole tour.
Also it used to really piss sunny garcia off, which cant be a bad thing.

I remeber the days when the WCT had 3 stops in france, and even came to newquay, and all in the height of summer when its almost uaranteed to be crap, I used to enjoy watching the pros trying to bash the crap out of knee high slop knowing that it was going off at their local break back home

Also watched the WQS Boardmasters, Newquay(I work in a shop and have a lot of free time) it was nice to know that the pros were having a 20/30min paddle out as it was so messy/stormy, thought it was just me who struggled in storm surf, the constant duck divings a real pain.

I see what ya mean about liking to see them show there talent in smaller mushier waves but personally i dont find it that great to watch.

I think they should stay in europe but go to somewhere like bundoran in ireland or just somewhere unknown that could really benefit form an event like an asp wct one.

i see your point, id like to see an event in thurso or somewhere, but the world tour is a business, and if they dont get people turning up to watch then sponsors wont pay to be there. Theres a couple of events in places out of the way already and they cost the main sponsors a lot to set up and run, most events have tons of sponsors and things going on all making money at the event to pay for it.
