I got my very first turn today I am so stoked.
When I have been catching waves it was all I could do to keep my mind on keeping my balance and just riding the wave and whether I out ran the wave and then having it pass me by. Today I had enough presence of mind to try a turn. I did what everyone said to do. I just looked at which way I wanted to go. Believe it or not it worked

I am mostly of learning on my own so things are coming along slowly but I am having a blast learning.

I was at the north end of the island (Wrightsville Beach). Waves where knee to thigh high with a little punch behind them. West wind of about 5mph. So it was perfect for me.

I surf VaB somewhat regurally, but live in Richmond.

How'd they get you surfing?

My brother and his good friends in VA Beach. They are members of the ESA and they would come stay with me in Wilmington during the contests. They always tried to get me to go out in the waves but I was very busy then and did not have the time to take up the sport. I always loved being in and around the water though. I recently divorced and needed something to do on my down time so this last September I went down to Sweet Water Surf Shop and talked to the guys down there and ended up walking out with a used 9 ft. Infinity Nose Rider in great shape. I have been going out in the water as much as I can.

Sounds good. I'm always checking wblivesurf for their cameras and daily pictures, especially during swells coming from the south, because ya'll usually have the same waves we do a day before.

I saw the ESA comp at VaB 3 (?) weekends ago, was your bro and his friends competing in that?

My brother does not compete in ESA but has a family membership. His son does in boys(short board) and Menehune Long board and Open Short board

His friend does compete in Grandmasters (short board) and Senior Long board. His daughter is in Girls (short board) and Menehune Long board and Open Short board.

Actually my brothers friend is going to be a co director next year for the VA. District.

Its just like justloafing says look where you want to move too, twist your shoulders/upper body in that direction whilst shifting your weight to which ever rail your turning to, a bit of practice you'll soon be carving your way down the line.
justloafing, good on yer. I started on a short board took me a while to get going, glad someone gave you good advice and your up and runnin (riding). Not sure if your E or W coast cause my US geography is crap, but I surfed Tibey Island in Georgia about 6yrs ago, it was so nice to surf in boardies.

northswell, I am on the East Coast of the US. About half way between New York and Florida. If your ever up this way again give me a shout. Sad to say the board shorts are put away for the winter:(


surfdaisy, I just looked down the wave. By turning your head the body follows. It seemed it took very little to get my board to turn, just turning my head did it. I ride a long board. It maybe different on a short board.
