Anybody ever get mad in the ocean?

Postby ginat » Wed Oct 25, 2006 2:53 am

Question: Have you ever had a release of anger/emotion that surprised you while surfing?

First, my recent trip to San Diego was amazing, but something very strange happened to me on the second day of it that I've been thinking about quietly since. While surfing the second day, I was doing very badly. I'm new so bad is standard for me and I'm not even sure you can call what I do surfing. Anyway, eventually I was surfing alone in an area and it was kinda nice to not have anyone see me even though I don't really get that embarrassed. Here's the weird part: I started to feel really frustrated and the next thing I knew I was experiencing real anger and facing the waves with an anger I've never felt before. It was almost like I knew the waves could take it and whatever was inside that needed to come out could come out there and it would be okay and safe. I also knew I couldn't win against the ocean but it didn't matter. It wasn't a temper tantrum because I surf like a doofus, it was more of a release of super pent-up anger and other crap I didn't even realize was in me. I don't really feel that kind of anger. Ever. So, it surprised me to feel anger that intensely there. I was absolutely exhausted and very tranquil afterwards! Anyone else ever have that kind of release while surfing or am I all alone on this one? I don't really play sports other than golf and I'm not a club thrower, and then I have been skydiving and didn't have the same anger experience but did feel really intense emotions and then super calm. Calling all Freuds here!

I think you should start drinking heavily, and stay away from sharp objects.

Even though I have not gotten that mad or really mad at all my brother did. He was just starting out and was having a heck of a time getting up on a wave. He tried and tried for months and never rode a wave. He told me it got "personal". Maybe that is what it took for him to get up and start riding.

Yea, I have hit someone in the face before. But that was his fault. He dropped in on me..then on the wave I rode up behind up and he turned around and pushed me off....So I gave him a bit of my fist.

ooops!

I've never got that angry when surfing. I find being in the sea is one of the most peacful and calm places i can be. I do get frustrated though when i cant get something right, like a new manouvere.
I can see why it would be a good place to have a temper tantrum though.

An oldie but a goodie! Why do I always forget this one true method for emotional healing? You're right though. I haven't had a drink in a long time so maybe I'm due one!

Whoa! I can't believe some of the stuff people do out there to each other. I can understand the fist thing and man it seems like the other guy should have had more respect and baled instead of causing a confrontation like that. Bet it felt good to whack him! For the record, I have never whacked anyone so I can retain my Southern Lady card! :P

Ah, "personal", that may have been similar to what I'm describing. It felt intensely personal to me at the time. I don't think it would have happened with anyone else around either. I love the ocean and usually find it to be so peaceful and graceful. It was surprising to me to feel that way that day.

i get angry when its busy, mainly due to drop ins, people not looking where their going and attempted snakes.
Never physically attacked anyone (yet), but revenge drop-ins or a bit of abusive shouting usually helps me calm down.

Vent, people! Vent!

It's bad for you to keep all that anger supressed.
