i) bees are unable to communicate "up".

ii) very few animals are able to communicate about things without stimuli. eg. an antelope can't 'tell' other antelope to run next time a lion comes. They can only 'talk' about it when it happens! as in "Run! There's a fleshin lion!"

iii) The expression "under the thumb", comes from medieval england where it was legal to beat your wife with a stick as long as the stick was of a lesser diameter than your thumb!

iv) In shakespearean times, the daughters of a family (being the lesser among the children) slept on large shelves, like bunk beds until they were married. From this we derive the saying "Left on the shelf"

the sky is blue because when you look at the sky on a clear day, you can see the sun as a bright disk. The blueness you see everywhere else is all of the atoms in the atmosphere scattering blue light toward you. (Because red light, yellow light, green light and the other colors aren't scattered nearly as well, you see the sky as blue.)
