going to bali!!! yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes

Postby gdude335 » Wed Oct 18, 2006 12:30 am

as you can see im really excited as to going to Bali. I am going to stay 7 days at Kuta and then im going up north for 6 days. I am with my parents.

my surfing level:
the biggest wave ive ever surfed was around 6 feet, pretty scary.
I have been surfing every weekend for 1 month and before that surfed every day for 2weeks and a half.
what i can do: follow a wave, go up and down it. I can do cutbacks but always run into foam. i somewhat got tubed, im so proud and it was soooo much fun.

Were i want to surf:
I am planning on surfing near the beach, around the more begginers area. A guide said that it was pretty crowded their. 1 km out their are some nice breaks i heard but they were more advanced and i dont think i will be going their because my mom is pretty scared about me going surfing alone.

I looked at the surf forecast and it was beetween 9 and 10 feet! Zomg im gonna die if its really that big.

Questions:
Do any of you know any better surfing spots very close to Kuta that are not very crowded?
Any of you guys know about how the waves will be? I saw on the surfing magazine some guy surfing a huge wave at Bali.
Words of confort before i get pummeled?
Should i wake up at sunrise and go surfing then?
Is there Red Bull in Bali because i will probably need it.

:P

ps:
im riding a 6.6 shortboard.
in the north i will be diving, no waves their.
Im going during XMas.

now you guys can all be jealous!
I will post videos and pics, im thinking of making a progression video from the start of my surfing carrier to the nowaday one.

Thanks alot for all the replies!

Crowds are less of an issue since the bombings and there are plenty of spots. in that area Check out WannaSurf (more specifically here and here).

You should do yourself a favour and get a good shaper to make you a board for the trip. Let them know exactly what your skill level is and where you hope to surf.

I am turning green with envy!

i checked out the sites you gave me, thanks alot!
i decided that i will be surfing kuta beach and then if im experienced enough kuta reef. I will not be getting a board shapped because i own a board. (i worked for a little while and got enough to buy me a brand new one!).
its a 6.6 spider and i plan to take it on the plane with me.
thanks alot for the info!

No probs, hope you have fun.

Just be aware that the board you plan to take may not be up to Indo waves... You might find yourself confined to beginner areas by virtue of board choice.

Crowds are still quite bad. Not as bad as they were though. Still, expect there to be at least 15-30 people in the water at kuta beach. And kuta reef is quite advanced, it is hollow, steep and breaks pretty shallow at some areas.

Also, don't worry about wave size. It will be around 4ft most of the time, maybe smaller, maybe bigger. And your 6'6 will probably a good board size.

Good luck!

Hey gdude, I just got back from Bali and had a great time!!!

To answer some of your questions:

Kuta beach is perfect for beginners......dont worry about the surf reports cos it's no-where near the size they forecast.

I was surfing 'Halfway' on Kuta beach for the first week, but noticed the currents were a bit stronger this year, and if you let yourself go, you could be a kilometre down the beach in a couple of minutes.......just gotta keep paddling to stay in position. There are loads of little peaks and you could have one to yourself until someone notices your having all the fun to yourself.

When I got fit I went to Dreamland for a few days, but then spent most of my time at Kuta Reef which was really crowded most of the time.........too crowded.

A 6'6 will do the job just fine..........Theres red bull in every shop. I used to have a couple of bottles before a surf.

Kuta will be quite busy at Christmas, but if you get a tide chart and head out an hour before high tide especially if its at dawn, you'll find the breaks almost empty.

Heres some photos of Kuta beach:

Bali's mostly lefts, so I suppose mostly goofy's would head there, but I saw plenty of regular footers as well.

dec: thanks for the wave size, it was pretty scary. I think il try to get up really early one day, then late the next.

pat:
the pictures are really nice, brings back memorie sfrom when i was 8 or so.
thanks for the advice on the currents on halfway. I will probably surf there.
red bull!!!
i will get a tide chart.

buckthis:
I'm goofy

im staring at the pictures. The one with no one is soooo nice. On the one with all the people paddling out it seems to be pretty crowded.

So, it was good fun then?

Hey Dec, I had a great time out there, but by the end of a month surfing almost everyday (except when I hit the reef and cut my feet up, I was out of the water for a few days) my arms were so sore I could hardly paddle!!!

Pity you couldnt make it out there.........some other time eh??

Here's some photos of a really crowded Kuta reef.............and one of me with a bottle RED BULL before a surf just for you gdude 8)

LOL! Of course!

Your level of ability, the waves you plan to ride (kuta beach).... yeah, 6'6" should be just fine.

Sorry if I alarmed you at all :D

Have fun!

Hey Libby, dont get me in trouble with Brent!!!!

I plan on going to New Zealand someday and dont need to be looking over my shoulder constantly.

He looks a lot bigger than me (judging by a photo you posted a while back)
