Hey as long as he is happy I say let him be. I learned a long time ago not to worry about the peir pressure.

All that being said not something I would do but if he is happy so be it. To each their own.

an add-on to this.... if you were the guy on the blue and red shortboard with earplugs in Croyde trying to catch every F£$%KING wave, eve though most of them you didn't catch, and you ended up messing up my rides AND YOU B@STARD, YOU SNAKED ME A FEW TIMES, I hope you get your just deserts! I'm usually chilled out when I'm surfing, and I'm always happy to let other people take waves, but idiots like these really annoy me!

It averages chest to head high faces. We get the storms every month of double overheads. Water temp right now is about 64 and it gets up to about 74 in the summer. Winds are generally not a factor so glaay conditions is the norm. I would definitly pack the board and wetsuite.

i feel your pain. every 10-15 year old kid here thinks they have priority on a wave, no matter whos on it. They just reckon cus they live in the area they are mad. Sometimes I just want to give them a nice right hook to the face. fleshin' arrogant shits

Is it acceptable to have priority on a wave, but are a beginner (like me) and don't ride the line of the wave (rather straight towards the beach)?

I'd be too afraid to do that because I'd expect more experienced surfers get angry for me taking up room and wasting the wave, that's why I stick to the more beginner's break.

Ignor it just go for it. Use ya common sense though. Everyone was a begineer at some point (i still class myself beginer even though i ride pretty well now - still it amazes me how so many people forget that they were once too a beginer)

Its my philosophy that a beginer automatically gains priority because the more experienced surfers can easily steal the wave should they wish. This rule does not apply for beginers who have no place being in the line up nor in crowded breaks or huge surf (usually not many out then any way  )

well if your gonna just go straight at the beach and someone else is paddling into the wave further down the line in theory its your priority but it is pretty annoying to pull off a wave to let someone go and then they bail or whatever. The answer is pretty simple tho, if you see someone dropping in and you know you wont make it down the line to them anyway you can always call them into the wave, that way you get your ride straight in and they dont get frustrated by missing a wave they could have ridden.

So simple, so sensible.... sadly Ive never seen it happen, but the theory is good :D
