i have no musical talent whatsoever! - I did once learn the intro to 'come as you are' and the intro to the old formula 1 tune on the guitar - im not sure I could count that though :D

I have a cheap starter guitar I just bought 6 months ago, I use to have a nice gibson acoustic and a Dixon XL series electric (it was yellow) when I was younger, but I suck. I can make up my own songs, and they sound good, but I have never taken the time to learn any popular songs, except a little nirvana and incubis. Oh and the Edmund Fitzgerald, I can play that too.

i think long thick hair is quite useful for a surfer in cold water.

I don't play guitar, but I can appreciate good guitarists. And now, because I enjoy making lists, here's a list of my favourite guitarists:

1. Al di Meola
2. Frank Zappa
3. John Petrucci
4. Michael Romeo
5. Ramon Gimenez

what do you call someone who hangs out with musicians?

A drummer

my fave drummer:
Terry Bozzio for playing the black page drum solo

I don't play guitar. I did buy a cheap fender strat copy once when I split up with a girlfriend and was convinced I was going to turn into a guitar playing rock god - I got bored after a few weeks and never bothered trying again. Still think I'd be good if I could be assed tho :P !

I think your stereo type is right, because now that a couple people have said that they play the piano, I want to learn how to play the piano. I know a guy that is a body builder that plays the Banjo. I wouldn't mind learning how to play the banjo either.

i play guitar all stles from heavy ear bleeding metal to soft pop rock. From screaming lead to classical and spanish styles. been playing for close to 14 years. Been surfing for just over 3 months

But i kno what you mean it seems like a lot of surfers play guitar but just lets get one thing straight being able to play "smoke on the water" dont mean you play guitar  (seriously someone out in the line up after chatting said we should have a jam session so i go all kitted out with my electric and amp to find out he whips out a classical guitar and starts pumping out that tune  I did still jam but it was a tad amusing considering from the lineup chat i was expecting him to be a guitar wiz

i want to learn the guitar. that was because over the summer i saw an 8 year old kid strumming Green Day's "Time of your Life" on an accoustic like it was part of his arm. the kid inspired me to play. and of course, listening to rock music all the time helps spur it a bit.

when i was a kid, i played the piano, switched to the cello, then switched to the flute. total opposite end of the spectrum of what you'd expect a surfer could do. then again, i'm not a surfer yet so...

yeah I like Joe Satriani, but I rate Al di Meola a lot more, even though their styles are different. Al di Meola plays so fast, and his tunes are awesome to listen to!
