I was in the ocean sports shop in brighton the other day and I saw this GORGEOUS longboard - yellow and cream, 9ft. I think it was Ocean Magic (?). It's reduced in a sale to £350. I'm sooooooooooo tempted to buy it (but have no money, obviously). Is that a reasonable price? I'm thinking of maybe getting it as an early xmas pressy and then i could take it out for new year when my shoulder's fully better. Oh, what a to do??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

if its a brand new glass board then that sounds like a decent price for a plank, they can be pretty pricey.

Hi Thaya,

Do you surf Shoreham at all? Plenty of girl surfers get out there, (my wife and daughter amongst them). Very mellow vibe in the water generally a friendly bunch at all levels from total beginners to very good. Nice and gentle at low tide with a bit more umphh on mid tide.

I remember from a previous thread that you had a bad experience with one of the Brighton surf shops, but if you are looking for a long board then have a look in Small Planet, for everything else I recommend Filf in Rottingdean www.filf.co.uk (who have some very good second hand mals for sale at the moment), both of which are run by local surfers and are within ten minutes drive of Ocean Sports and will do you a good deal (ie haggle a bit)

But for £350 the board sounds like a good buy. I would however check the glassing on the board, it may be very light which is why it is cheap. There are a couple of guys in Ocean Sports who know their stuff about boards, the rest are unfortunately not so clued up.

is shoreham surfable? i've driven past loads of times and never seen a wave. maybe i don't know the best place to go - is there some sort of secret spot? thanks for the advice. i'm thinking i might wait a bit longer and live with my minimal. I've just been watching too many longboarding movies lately!

Shoreham is surfable. Very surfable in fact

But it can be a bit hard to find (you wont find the break without directions, its quite well hidden and away from the tourist spots). Its certainly not a secret spot, but I'll not put it up on here

PM me if you want directions. BUT... take note... its yet another spot on the south coast where you need to be very sure there's a swell on the way, and it doesnt work at high tide. So the conditions that make it a worthwhile trip are a bit few and far between!

One of the few places on the south coast to get some protection from SW winds though

Shoreham gets pretty good, there are three main breaks to choose from, I was out on Sunday, and got some shelter from the wind, hopefully will get out again this weekend.

I am a bit short of time at the moment but in the next couple of days I'll send you some info of where to go, and also where not to go, you certainly can't see the break from the road by Ocean Sports
