Yeah, Silvershark - learn your wave etiquette.
The person on the peak, on the furthest outside of the wave has priority.
drowningbitbybit/WooD; I'm not sure I agree with "Furthest inside" definition. Being that 'inside' means more out towards the shoulder.. so maybe "least inside"?
Even if you took off on a breaking section inside, if some guy caught the wave and makes it around that breaking section to where you are now surfing, HE has the priority and you should get out of his way.
Sure it sucks, and that's why shortboarders tend to hate longboarders, but thems the rules.
As for skuba's question - the guy who did that is a prat.
You sit out there, see the wave coming, start paddling for it, and this jack-off comes racing around your back, stealing priority and making it so you'd end up dropping in on him.
I'm with the others. Once, I'd let it go. If the jerk does it again, as he's paddling towards you, you have a few options if it's obvious you were going for the wave and he was completely out of position prior to you going for it.
- keep an eye out for him, out-paddle him and maintain your priority
- paddle alongside/in front of him, effectively cutting him off/forcing him to go wider around you. If he bitches, bring up that he snaked you last time, and you were just playing his game.
- drop in regardless. I'd only recommend this on the 3rd or 4th wave he does this. I'd also preface it, as he's paddling around you, with "Hey, jag-off, you gonna respect the lineup or snake people all day you wanna-be?"
