Phuket Surf

Postby borneng » Sat Oct 01, 2005 9:09 am

I'm well aware that there really isn't much surf in Phuket. But I am going on holiday there in December so I was wondering if anyone whose recently been to Phuket have any info and/or tip about the rare chance of surf there.

I hear that the current there is pretty hazardous. Is this true ?

Many thanks advance.

My fiance is from Thailand, and she says Phucket almost never gets waves. But then again, she doesn't Surf, so she copuld be wrong. I am going to Thailand next year, and I would like to know theese answers also. So if anyone has ever surfed Thailand before, give up some good spots.

Your fiance is right. Everyone who's been there told me there's not much surf there. Even if there is the rare chance, December is not the ideal swell season for it anyway. Looks like I might just hit the pool, the spa and relax while I'm there. 8)

December is normaly flat because the SW monsoon finishes in Oct and thats what creates the waves,March - Oct has wind swept waves in Phuket that are really fun.
Beter off going to Sumatra for decent waves.

I wish I could, but the holiday to phuket has alerady been arranged and surfing was a bi-product I was hoping to get from it. I am planning to take surfing-holiday to Bali next March though. So I'll settle with pool and spa in Phuket, oh and shopping in Bangkok of course. ha ha

Ngomong-ngomong bahasa Indonesia nya jago enggak Bule ?

Bule,

Kapan kamu pergi ke Phuket ? Kasih kabar yah. Seru juga ketemu teman untuk berbahasa Indonesia.

I don't speak Aceh, and never heard of the langauge being spoken to be perfectly honest. Is the surf good there in Aceh ? How about security and safety though? I mean I heard of nasty horror stories about what the Aceh movement people would do.

Hey guys, I live in phuket now and i have been here since june. Between June and October there is some awesome surf. I am talking 6-8ft high tubes..and no crowds. I believe at the right time it is the best surf spot in south.

Drop down here around June and bring a shortboard!!

Yeah, the coastline around Phuket is raging. 12 foot killer waves all the time.

That's why familys go there on charter tours.

If you are thinking of going to a surfing destination, phuket is not wel known..so look somewhere else.

i am just saying..if you are here at the "right time" then you get some pretty awesome surf..but december..no chance!

and no need to get sarcastic!

Halo Little_JoAo. Makasih yah untuk nasihat nya. Sepertinya sih Mentaiwai masih dalam impian aja dulu deh. Soalnya saya masih dalam kategori pemula. Kamu lokasi nya dimana di Indoensia? Saya aslinya orang Batak tapi enggak pernah tinngal di Sumatra (cuma numpang lahir di Lampung). Paling lama sih tinggal di Jakarta.
Jarang saya lihat orang Indonesia post di surf forum, jadinya seru. :D

Hello Little_JoAo. Thank you for your advise. However, Mentawai might remain in my dream for now. Because I am still a beginner. Where are you based in Indonesia? I am originally Bataknese but never lived in Sumtara (but was born in Lampung). The longest I live was in Jakarta.
I don't see many Indonesian posts in surf forums so it's pretty exciting when I see one. :D
