laptop?

My computer was getting really old and frail. It would have been 11 this month, but sadly it passed away. A few months ago it fell into a coma and then died suddenly. My friend managed to zap it back to life, and I was really pleased, but it finally had it in June and it's RIP under my bed till I decide what to do with it.

I'm really stuck without one cuz I have to do loads of work at home. I want to get a laptop - nothing fancy, but one that can use memory sticks, record CDs and play DVDs would be nice. I'm not bothered about getting top of the range stuff - just something basic that will last a few years. Don't really want to pay more than £400, maybe £500 tops. Any ideas or recommendations? Am sat browsing catalogue at work but they're all really fancy and expensive. I just think what's the point when they're going to be outdated next month? I wonder whether you can buy stuff that's already outdated (but better than my old one from 95) really cheap?

I have a Dell laptop - few problems at the begining but got it all fixed and its been running fine ever since, Ive heard that they are usually really reliable and there is usually some kind of deal on.

Glad I got a laptop instead of a computer as it can come everywhere around the house with me and I can just lay about using it instead of sat at a desk.

Thaya... if youve got a screen and keyboard, why not consider a Mac Mini, fantastic little things and they can be carted around everywhere. My boss is thinking of getting one as his laptops just given up the ghost.

try ebay or if you really wanna be clever sign up for a dropshipping company and buy a refurbished one for peanuts. Scored a $400 soundsystem for $180 doing that

Avoid ebay at all costs some of the biggest scams ive read up on have involved laptops!

Dell have a goo reputation and are by far the cheapest.

everything.... widgets, they never crash, easy to use, good lookin, iLife, drag & drop, solid, durable, free updates, and more. Microsoft office works and looks better than it does on pc's. The best part, although I don't have it (why should I?), is that you can run windows in a seperate window on a mac... that just takes the piss!

They dont go wrong!!!!!!

PCs are made by different companies (Dell, PC world, whoever), using a variety of components from all over the place, and run microsoft OS and software etc etc.
Macs on the other hand, are all built by Mac and run Mac OS. So they're much less likely to have "conflicts".
Also, there are almost no viruses etc written for Macs, unlike PCs where every email or trip on the net is a threat.

...And of course they're much prettier, user friendly, funkier and generally more sexy.

okay, I'll put my computer geek hat away now, and start looking at swell foecasts again :lol:

Are you saying that I could use Microsoft Word on it? I just need to know that stuff would be compatable with the computers at work otherwise I'm gonna have problems. Might have a browse round the computer shops (my idea of hell on earth, nearly as bad as shoe shopping) this weekend but not gonna rush into buying one. hopefully will decide on something by the end of the month.

macs are only worth it if you wanna do graphic design or run music programs like cuebase, if you want an entertainment system get a PC

I know its the choice of colledge/uni's. But I run cubase sx 3 on my laptop + over 5 other high preformance sound editing applictions and have never had a crash or frozen when using it. Mind you my laptop is extremelly high preformance and i have 2 gigs of ram

I would go with whatever you are already familiar with. PC or Mac. Both have their problems, but it won't be so bad if you know something about the system you are using.
My wife grew up with PCs and now has Macs at work. Whenever see has problems at work it takes forever just for her to figure out where to go and what to do. But, the same problem on the PC and she already knows what to do. This has been very frustrating for her at times.
