First time hurts?

its very difficult to get a work permit for the usa, especially to stay there indefinatly, in know of a few people trying. how different is hawaii to the rest of america, cos im pretty sure i couldnt stand living in america.

you guys talk about getting tired of cold and cloudy weather but dont you think youd ever get tired of sweaty hot frustrating weather? when its cold everything feels clean and im a psch. major and feel i have the right to say, it is proven that people are more aggressive and easily fristrated in hot weather. like most englishmen (race i mean) i turn red when im really hot. dont you think youd ever get sick of that? atleast when its cold you can just put on a jacket and be comfy outside, unless its below freezing. when its hot, there is nothing you can do, but get pissed off at everything, turn red, sweat, stink, give up on what you had planned to do, and jump in the water which youre bored with. or like me, you can spend an extra 4 hours in the air-conditioned school library, as boring as it is, just to avoid the afternoon heat wave. sound fun??? not to me!

I'd like to butt in here and mention that I live in Trinidad, which is humid a lot of the time, and you sweat most of the time there, but there aren't many good waves around home, and there's absolutely NOTHING to do regarding nightlife, unless you want to go to the same two clubs all the time. What I'm trying to say is to stop whinging about how crap Hawaii is, and be happy it isn't worse.... at least you get good surfing spots and you don't run the risk of being kidnapped when you drive around alone. If you lived in a colder country, you would probably whinge about it too.

honolulu has a lot of booty dancing clubs for a night life but im not into that.

What the ....! You think Hawaii is hot?

I am not so sure about farenheight, but if it gets below 70f. at night it is cold here! Its about 36C and 80-90% humidity all year around here..
You've just gotta deal with it!

yeah really hot weather can be a pain, (especially for us celts), but its just as bad working in freezing codl winter - your hands and feet are numb and your wearing your warmest gear, then you go to an appointment witha customer and their heating is blasting in the house, the change from cold to boiling hot makes you sweat a lot more than when its hot all the time and youre used to it.

If you like the sea i would think there was loads to do in hawaii, every watersport you can think of, excellent for diving, snorkelling and spearfishing. spose if you dont like the sea it would be a bit crap tho.

id take really hot weather over the dull overcast rainy xxxxx we get here most of the year, serously though i hate the weather in this country but i dont moan about it in every thread, some times i do wonder if your just rubbing are noses in the fact you live in hawaii, id love to have consitant surf all year round and get to surf without a wetsuit, but nope im stuck in rainy dull england with are inconstant gutless surf wearing a 5/3 wetsuit most of the year and having to deal with ice cream headaches during the winter, but i just get on with it and work towards geting myself out of this place and some day live some were alot nicer with consistant waves, but i dont dwell on the negative side of it, i just get on with it or it would just eat away at me.

if you hate hawaii that much do some thing to get out of it

hey phil, i want to leave and will after i graduate. at the university here i pay about 170 per credit since im a resident. any where else will be 3x as much. plus dorm. and i will lose a semesters worth of credits just because of bull transfer rules.

ive never liked it here much, in fact, the reason i started surfing was because i hate hawaii. i thought to myself, youre going to have to live in hawaii for the next 6 years so make the most of it. so i started surfing, its too hot for anything else. that was 4 years ago.

im sure we ger more waves than england but its not constant. south swells supposedly come in the summer, and we only had 2 so far. the rest of the time was flat-2. we do however have kamikaze reef breaks about 100 feet in front of rocks leading to land that is usually pumping with large swells. i go there and so do a few others when it gets really slow.

i went into my rampage because again, someone asked me why hawaii sucks. maybe i should just write it in my profile.

i suffer from SAD Seasonal Affective Disorder in the winter i dont get it really bad like some people just feel alot more tired, lack concentration and tend to over sleep and genrealy feel less motivated to do much, becuse of the lack of sunlight through the winter, so id love to live some where like hawaii where i wouldnt suffer from it anymore. i plan on moving to a hotter country with more consitant surf at least by the time im 35.

something happend to me today that helped increase my desire to leave hawaii when i went looking for a closed trail called the stairway to heaven. i parked my car and was standing on a sidewalk, reading the "closed park" sign on the 15 foot tall fence. this hawaiian guy started yelling at me from his house, calling me a jackass and to get off his lawn, when i wasnt on it. i cant help but think he would have been nicer if i wernt white. a security guard came out from god knows where, hired just to guared that entrance. the other man kept yelling and calling me names until i left.

here hawaiians have free housing and im pretty liberal but these nice looking neighborhoods will have 100 billion cars parked on the street, yards, sidewalks and driveways. people dont have to work and look for trouble. but you cant tell where these areas are since the houses look nice, except for the cars.

I found out later that the trail is closed because the entrance area at the base of the mountain is owned by the hawaiian homestead. this makes up 10% of the land. the rest of the 90% is owned by the state, who has been trying to make an agreement with the orginization for 6 years now. I also learned that there are 3 security gaurds gaurding all 3 possible entrances, all week, weekends, and holidays, during most daylight hours. there is no reason for this, and the land is unused. it is just a twisted way for the hawaiian homestead orginization to stick it to the U.S. government, which begs the title of this post, "aloha spirit" is a made up idea.

the stairway to heaven is probably one of hawaiis best hikes, its a railed stairway up a ridgeline to the top of a mountain, with weird abandoned radio towers and a view of the north and south sife of the island.

i need to clarify something, hawaiians have a program but they have to apply abd be accepted for the free housing for hawaiians, and so far not all that want housing have gotten it.

Hey Phil, my brother gets pretty serious SAD too, unfortunatley he's pretty fleshin' in terms of moving to a better climate for some time because of his criminal record (i dont care what people say - drugs are BAD NEWS kids). I'm not sure whether i get it or not, i get very tired in winter, as in could quite happily go bed as soon as it gets dark at 4.30 in the afternoon and i struggle with my uni work load in winter just because i need to sleep so much more i have alot less time to study! But i dont get depressed or pareticularly moody i dont think. I'm considering getting one of those UV lamps that mimick sunrise to help me get up on dark winter mornings - have you ever used one??

i was advised to get one of those lamps but the one i was told to get was £250 and i just couldnt aford it, shame theres nothing on the NHS for it.

if you can aford it then it might be worth giving it ago but i cant find any under £150

The very first time I went out, I think the stoke of standing up on a wave, and realizing what was going on kind of numbed me for a few days, because I don't remember any pain at all.

But, the second, third, and pretty much still every time I go out I feel like I hit the gym when I come out of the water.

I just remembered, maybe I was numb my first time because the water was only like 36 degrees. That's probably what did it.

And one time I was messing around in the shore pound, and I caught a wave as it was breaking on the shore, and it slammed me into the sand, lucky it was a sandy bottom, but it knocked the wind out of me, and it cracked the fiberglass on the bottom of the tip of my board. That hurt.

It's been almost a year since I originally created this thread (I just came across this site again with google ) and I've only just got round to having a lesson!

I had one lesson in Newquay just over a week ago ... I only managed to stand up about 3 times for a "decent" length of time but it was great fun.

Then 2 days ago I bought my own wetsuit and went down to Polzeath and hired a board for 3 hours (was extremely tired afterwards!) and I can get up on my board almost every time in the white water now

I'm so hooked on surfing, I can't wait to go again! It's going to cost me a fortune going to Newquay all the time though!

And as to hurting after my lesson, it wasn't too bad.
