getting a surfboard

well my cousin surfs and he lets me use his longboards but now i want to get my own. im pretty good at longboards but there really boring. i dont have a job so i want to go straight to a shortboard so i can save money in the long run.

i am like you exept for the experience. I bought a shortboard 2 weeks ago after 2 weeks of surfing. Ok enough about me.

It will be hard standing up for you on the board because it will be so much shorter. I would recommend something that is around 6.6 (not too short yet)
and fat with quite some float to make it take waves more easily. I have a fat and pretty wide 6.6 and i love it, its really easy to turn on it. It will take at least a day to stand up properly.

so you say i should get a longer shortboard? i have ridden a shortboard before, standing really wasn't that hard but i only did it once.. like what brand... model...

what size was teh shortboard youve ridden on? Was it thick?

If you're surfing New Jersey slop, and want a shortboard, look into a good hybrid.

Probably something around 19" to 21" wide. For someone 5'7", I might go 6-1 or 6-2, with 19 1/2" wide, 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches thick.

Reason is, you want to be able to pick up the small thigh-beaters near the peak while your friends are all paddling like madmen into the whitewater, yet still be able to paddle into the shoulder to overhead stuff we saw the past couple days with Ernesto.

Hybrids are good all-around boards.
