bit of help please..

Apologies in advance for a newbie and long post. I have spent plenty of time searching info, but I’m after a bit of general advice.

I have a two week break in November and I’ve always wanted to learn to surf. I want to combine doing that in the daytime with somewhere that has a bit of life in the night, somewhere that has good food and ok places to stay is also a bonus..

I’ve seen there are lots of “schools” you can go to, but the 400$ a week group package thing is not really what I had in mind.

I kind of hoped I’d just find a place that had bungalows on the beach, a few good bars/clubs/restaurants for night, and in the day, I would pay a local surfer to teach me for a few hours each day. all very casual, not an organised thing where you all wear the group t-shirt and get picked up in the minibus. And not somewhere I’ll piss off proper surfers when I f*ck up.

I had a mate who did exactly that in sri lanka – found a nice place to stay, would surf in the morning, eat, sleep, chill on beach and then back out again. and he learnt with the same guy on the beach each day.

There seem to be a lot of places you could potentially do this, but having spent considerable time in asia, I was keen on visiting central America, say maybe costa rica or mexico.

Does anyone know of places that might fit the bill as I’ve described. I’m sure you know the kind of thing I have in mind.

Hey rauch that's a pretty specific question you've asked. I personally don't know the area and i'm only aware of one poster on this forum who's from costa rica. Do you have a budget you're working to, where you flying from? I'm guessing the kind of break you're looking for might need to be arranged when you get there, you may get a reply on this forum with the infomation you need but unless someone has done exactly what you're describing i doubt it.

Thanks ks, I suppose it is pretty specific. I sort of thought it was something more people might have come across. I’ll be flying from the UK.

budget wise, I work all year, so its not a massive concern. I’d rather not stay in a plush hotel complex on a tourist beach in mexico, but that’s because of atmosphere, not price.

I suppose what I’m really asking is, can anyone recommend a place that is good to hang out and is also beginner friendly, but not one of those annoying surf schools I keep seeing on the net.
