duck diving - getting clobbered

Rolling is by far the best method, if you don't find a rip/deep section you can paddle out in.

Also, by going turtle, the way the board is shaped when upside down, you shouldn't really get pushed back and the wave should glide right through you.

Though, just like duck diving, even when you roll (turtle, eskimo roll, kayak roll), it works best if you have a bit of steam going forward to propel you through the wave.

Yep, good book. Devoured it cover-to-cover after I bought it. Possibly not for everyone, but I really enjoy leafing through it from time to time even now.

I love the bit where "the giant aussie" just stands up on his mal and sinks it before the oncoming wave gets there. I've tried but I can't pull it off :D

I also reckon it's a must read for shortboarders wanting to expand their surfing.

dont chuck your board, just go a bit to far foward so when you roll over you can pull the noes down, it works alot better

Worst thing abuot turtle rolling is when a wave thats overhead dumps, you roll and feel the curl sucking you back..then you get held down with no breath left :D Its happened way too many times...

rember to blow out of your nose lightly as well or you end up geting a few mouthfulls of water up it

i hate turtle rolling and never really do it or pulled it off in big waves, board usualy gets ripped out of my hand or by the time ive got back on and started paddling i get nailed by the next set

i just find the rip and paddle like i was being chassed by machete wielding chimpanzees

i find that aswell, but then i was watching this guy and his board started pearling befor he rolled it and so i started pushing the noes slightly down then pulling it when your upsidown and it works like a charm, but i still try and find a rip to save the head freeze and mouthfuls of water.

Once you've ducked and you're under the water, if you put all the weight on one rail, the board tips to one side, and consequently one side goes slightly deeper. If you time it right, and then push on the other rail, you can then sink the other side further. So you can 'shuffle' the board further down during your duck.

Here is a video showing the "slice and duck" technique. I wonder if the board's tail would still be high in the water and get slammed the oncoming wave. I'll give it a try and hope the longboard responds to my 140 pound push.
