Why so much fighting?

Postby LovintheSurf » Sat Aug 05, 2006 6:20 am

I've noticed that the longboarder forum here is sprinkled with resentment towards shortboarders. Like the threads "why longboarders are smarter than shortboarders" or "why longboarders have more fun", etc. Why do you guys care so much? Surfing is about the fun and PERSONAL sense of self fullfilment you get from it, not anything or anyone else . As of now i ride a longer board but not a longboard (7'4'' Gun), cause im a beginner, but i plan on going down to a shortboard because i really just wanna tear the waves up, probably comes from my snowboarder/skater insticts  :D . But yah someone fill me into why the longerboarders have this attitude towards shortboarders..

its mainly because we get all the sh!t normaly. shortboarders allways go on about how longboarders allways drop in, which is only true in a few cases. shortboarders allways drop in on us (again sometimes) but you dont see us yelling and screeming. also human nature is to fight and argue, were as good as a pack of dogs

Are you sure it's a gun and not a funboard?

anyway - there is a mentality shift between longboarders and shortboarders many times.. shortboarders tend to be younger, more aggressive, a higher population percentage of kooks (just because media-wise, a shortboard is 'cooler'), and so on.

Now, I grew up a shortboarder, so hopefully no one gets all defensive on me.

Longboarders typically are older and more relaxed. There are younger kids into longboarding, but not as many as those that go the shortboard route.

The biggest issue typically is that longboarders can catch a wave earlier, so we all sit further outside than the shortboarders. Therefore, we usually are already up on a wave when a shortboarder is paddling for it and they either have to pull back or (many times) they drop in on us, and after a few times, arguments start "you're stealing all the waves", "well stop dropping in and I'll give you some" and so forth.

Also, being further inside, shortboarders many times are just sitting right in the way and don't move when longboarders are obviously paddling for a wave.

Gun+ begginer = Barely popping up, and only riding straight.

I am not quite sure that you mean a gun...Is it shaped like a toothpick? or a german sasauge? (sorry, just the only comparison I could think of...)

i dont see why everybody finds it so hard to belive im learning on a gun or a semi-gun really cause its only a 7'4''. I know the difference between a Gun,Minimal, or funboard. And yes it is shaped more like a "toothpick" as you would say rather than a "sausage". And no it doesnt equal me barley standing up and riding straight. After a week of surfing i was popping up fine and riding down the line up on 2-3 foot waves. But anyway back on topic, i think Rich R had a good point on the whole fighting thing because of the stealing waves but yah .thanks for the input

true true.
Im jealous how longboarders can get on teh wave so much before it breaks. Anyways its a reef here so i just go sit in my spot and wait for waves to come here, no other surfers to worry about most of the time.
I try to respect other surfers as much as i can.

You should do what i did, get yourself a kite and when the wind comes up abit and the surf ain't that clean you can steal all the waves! Even the longboarders! :D
It does feel good though cruising around on my mini surfboard just outside the break waiting for the sets to appear rather than sitting on my board wishing that damn pesky wind would drop! You can almost hear the surfers thinking "Hmmm that looks like fun"
They'll always be enough waves for everybody we don't need to fight over them.
