Goofy foot conundrum a weird story

Postby isaluteyou » Thu Jul 27, 2006 6:10 pm

Its been about 10 or so days since i began surfing. I wasnt sure if i was goofy or regular what made it worse for me was that when im dropknee bodyb board i have no preference. Anyway for the first 7 days of surfing i did it goofy footed I got it just right and started to ride waves but i just could not manuever it felt soooo weird. Anyay i chatted to surfer and he asked me some questions like "how u skateboard" etc etc. anyway the end result was everyone was convinced i was regular footed  So i started to do it. I felt like a complete prune i couldnt pop-up i had a severe case kneeitiss i couldnt bring that leg up. I almost was going to pack the idea in and suddenly i actually poped up and wow i had so much extra balance and controll. 2 days later and i can pop up even better regular now

Some one told me its get to be-able to popup on both legs but i deffinetly favour regular now.

did anyone else have the same problem when they began surfing?

Can't say that I have.
Someone did the push me from behind test. I plopped down my right foot in front of me for balance, and it's been goofyville for me ever since.

**I did try to pop-up regular a few times before for fun, but because I instinctually want to put my right foot forward I ended up with both feet next to eachother...that's no good.

Tom Curren (at least I think it was him) started out surfing goofy foot, but his dad made him change because he said that it just wasn't the proper way to surf.

I'm no expert but I reckon you can 'change' feet while you're learning. I've never skated, snowboarded etc. so I just started out with my right in front, as I'm right-handed. And it felt most natural when I was making an arse out of myself, popping up on the beach :D

When I got a little better on my pop-up I suddenly realised I wasn't goofy anymore - hehe, its really hard to stand that way with your leash on the wrong foot!!

Yeh i sooo have that problem!
I used to be a regular for a few days, when i started surfing and now im a goofy its odd.
But i ride better as a goofy but i can still ride natural, and soo my leash used to get in the way and it was a real problem.
But im pretty sure im a goofy now(at least i think i am) :? :D

From my own experience i think it has to do with which foot you use the most my right foot is what i kick a ball and anything physical i rely on it. So when i first started i think my righty had more brains in it  when i overcame the lazy left foot popping up regular was smoother and i had soooo much more control. I have prctised regular so muh now that it feels awkward popping up goofy  weird how things change :)

I think that the foot u have more control on must be the foot that stays at the back of your baord so you have more control. But i may be wrong
(It's all so confusing) :? :)

 yep thats how i felt to begin with, confused :? but i figure the power leg/ controlling leg must be at the back.

When i was a kid, my dad taught me to pop up goofy if I go left..and regular if I go right. It's been a huge help with my surfing, because I can take any wave :D

Try skateboarding like that. It really helps me when I am not surfing.

PS..Longboard switch/goofy/regular/whatever you get me..Is a lot easier than shortboarding the opposite
