Pinholes in glassing

Postby Shaka_Tacos » Tue Jul 25, 2006 4:40 pm

Hey all, I just got my new board a few days ago and later after inspecting it there seems to be a few small pinholes in the glassing. One is on the nose of the board and looks like it goes down to the stringer. Iv'e surfed twice with it and the holes seem to be watertight. Do you think I should worry about them or take them somewhere to get repaired? Also I somehow managed to get a small ding on the bottom of my rail. It just looks like the glass somehow chipped away just a very small bit. Do you think I should get some suncure and repair it? Sorry for all these newbie sounding questions, this is my third board but my first two were epoxy so I don't have much experience with foam boards. Thanks in advance.

Yeah dude, I'd just get some suncure and fill in the holes and over the chip...better safe than sorry.

Hi there and welcome,

The pin holes won't go down to the foam on the board, they'll just be in the top sanding coat. Underneath that coat will be a whole layer of glass and resin so it's highly unlikely that you'll get pinholers lining up on the sanding coat and on the glass lamination underneath. If you can though i would show it to the place you bought the board if that's possible and see if they'll fix the other ding for you for free.
If that's not really possible and the ding on the rail is watertight i'd probably leave it for a while as your bound to get some more dings on your board. Once you have a few fix them all in one go!

yep, suncure sucks, youll probablyl need to do a proper repair at some point and you can tidy up the other bits then properly. suncure just comes off.

You can spray some clear laquer over the board and then wipe over it with some very fine sand paper. The laquer should gon into the pin holes and seal them up. Pin holes are normaly caused by a dry laminated goat. Like Kite said they should only go down to the matting.
