Currently riding a 7'6 want to go longer need some input.

Hey Fellow Surfers.
Im a surfing noob and I bought a 7'6 NSP funboard too learn on thinking I might graduate to a shorter board, I have now realized that im too big and unco too eva ride a shortboard as I strugle to catch waves when I paddle for them on the 7'6 . I have decided to trade the NSP (like bic) in for a longer traditionally shaped mal/mini-mal , Cant really be longer than 8'1 cause I still want to be able to fit it in my little Mazda 323 hatch. Anyone got any suggestions/recommendations on style/shape I should go for, the waves at my break are between 2-4ft and can be rough and windblown. Im 6'2 95kg

buy a roof rack and get a 9" all-arounder, if you do want to do that ask and il show u some good all-around boards

Blue Snow Cone , I have decided to buy a ute in the next month or so soon as i can sell the mazda so ill be able to go the 9' no prob. Whatever u can show me would be good.

This might be a bic board but it has very thin rails so it is manoeuvrable it also it cheap and will be able to take a couple of beatings

I had a go on this circle one board and I found it really easy to get to grips with it looks nicer but depends where you go will cost more because it is fibreglass.

this is another good board that I haven’t tried but a guy dropped into pipeline at 20ft on it. Also it will be slightly cheaper as its southpoint.

Where did that come from... I am now under the 90kg mark but I get up to the 100kg mark from time to time. Do find it hard when over 90kg on less then 6'6" but have never had a problem on a 9+' mal... that said, I do feel more confortable on the 9'6" single fin

you better have a car to haul that LB in! Honestly, I would not recommend getting a popout, don't shop for boards online if you know definately what specs you want, and are ordering a custom board...you can get decent cheap(ish) handcrafted long boards from surf shops..just drop into a couple and ask the clerks, they are usually beach bums...However, beware, if you are shopping in bondi, possibly Mosman (where I live) don't take the first things they throw at you, it usually is the most expensive, highest performance thing they have. Sus out your options before buying!

Lived in the Gong up until 1 year ago... so many good shapers around the immediate area let-alone all of Australia. Agree totally with you Brian, don't go a popout if you can help it . Have a talk to a shaper esp. if you don't know what you both need and want.

Well I'm 5'7" and around 148lbs (67kg) I got a 9'8" single fin 3 1/16" thick which I really like (I probably don't need it to be quite that long). I just thought something similar with a little more thickness (maybe a little more length) would suit him very well.
Although I could just be talking out my @$$ too, you decide...

that board is amazing, i had a go on one and wow did it respond, i think it might not be stabel enuf for a beginer, but it is a good board

Seriously, you are only a little taller and heavier than my wife. She finds my 9'6" too much to deal with on all but the glassiest of days. I reckon a 9'0" or even an 8'6" would probably be better suited to you. Depending on your level ability, of course.

I reckon you are right doug, I really like a 9'1" progressive 1+2 and the last time I road a board of such I weighed 99kg (could have been a touch more ). Having your shortboard though sort of defeats the purpose of having a progressive longboard as they perform well in similar conditions, all depends on what you want to ride.

Yeah good points Doug.
I'm quite happy with it though. I can get into practically anything; which you need in MD more often than not. It's got great glide and I'm quite able to turn it (it's fun to really lean into one with some oomph). I wanted a big single fin to carve smooth long arcs and to noseride (Just starting to work on cross-stepping). I don't think I'd go below 9' or 9'2" or a 2+1/tri fin setup; I've got a good shortboard for preformance riding.

As long as it works for you and you are having fun it's good!

I'm 6'0" and 82kg (need to lose 2kg). My current 9'6" single is around 2 3/4" thick and it works well for me pretty much everywhere. Most people my height and weight prefer something thicker.

hehe! Nah - paddling my longboard just feels sweeter when I am at around 80kgs. Seem to have put on a couple of kilos over winter is all.

It'll come off pretty quickly.

Thanks for all your input, I have decided to go for the hand shaped progressive longboard between 9'2 - 10ft, Ill be keepin my eyes peeled for some bargains still have to organise new car sell my old car so will have to put up with the 7'6 NSp for at least another month or so but Im looking forward to an upsize went out again today cause i had a day off and dropped off the back off 5 out of 10 waves, but managed to ride 2 faces all the way in was pretty wrapped , cheers pplz
