Shortboard? Moving down

Postby JfetZ » Fri Jul 21, 2006 2:17 am

I have been surfing a 7'2" with a width of 21" but i dont remember the thickness...i know its maybe a little higher than the average shortboard...thats about it. I am 6'4 and 180lbs Recently i have been havingproblems with duckdiving, but i want to move down to a shorter board and to be able to do cutbacks, snaps, etc. Mainly just progress in skill and to progress down to a shorter board. Right now id say im in the advanced beginner range where im putting together some turns but nothing special. Sadly, I dont know how far to go down and if its the right time...any suggestions?

go for it man! i used to be in your shoes, i surfed a 7'4" funboard, but got bored with just going straight, and trying really hard to turn, then i got a 5'11", fish tail, now, i can do bottom turns, semi cutbacks, semi snaps, i say "semi" coz i cant really pull it off all the time, but eventually i will, goodluck!!

Have a look at some of the modern style of fish. Maybe around 6ft 6, swallow tail, nice and wide but not too thick. I'm at a similar stage to yourself and want to improove my surfing so that io can ride a shortboard. So i'll be shaping myself one of these boards soon as i know they combine the right combination of wave catching ability but with shortboard characteristics.

A surfboard doesnt do manouvres, a surfer does

Moving onto a shorter board is unlikely to help your surfing. Someone your height and weight should be able to pull at least basic manouvres on a 7'2

What????

We've seen you surf KS, you seem to be able to surf anything!!

And somehow do it with a laidback grace :D

Next time we meet, have a go on my hybrid (I would have offered last time... but I broke it.... ) That combines shortboard fishiness pretty well. It might give you some ideas to play with

Knowing the thickness of your current board would help make some better suggestions. Also, how easy do find it to paddle your current board?

That aside; I would think you would want something that is a least 2.5" thick.
Maybe 19.5-20" wide and around 6'8" long.
