Hi Thaya, sorry to hear about your accident. It's a real shame that you won't be able to surf for 6 months! I tend not to listen to the doctor, and get out on the water as soon as the pain is bearable enough. I think that may be why my wrist is still not healed now. NO EVERYBODY THERE IS NO OTHER REASON MY WRIST IS NOT HEALED!

You're still not excused SW meets, and disciplinary action will be taken if you miss any without a proper excuse (dog ate your surfboard, etc)

Be cool, and don't worry.... I'm always injuring myself windsurfing (yesterday I hit my shin on the board and dug my fin into my foot, last month I sprained my wrist, a few months before I sprained my ankle) so I reckon all that time off probably equates to about 6 months. What you need to do is get lots of dream surfing in. Dream surfing is my patented way of improving my surfing, while still getting a bit of the stoke while not surfing.

DREAM SURFING

1. First you get as many surfing DVD's as possible
2. get yourself a nice comfy chair
3. You may need a TV and DVD player too
4. Got a nice cool drink yet?
5. Get a DVD on and sit and watch it
6. Feel stoked
7. Close your eyes visualise yourself doing moves that the surfers are doing
8. Open your eyes and look at the moves again
9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 as necessary
10.Feel stoked that you are now dream surfing champion of the world

Continue to do this. When you're back on the water, impress yourself and others around you. Tell them that you don't know how you just managed to acquire this new skill, especially sinceyou've been out of the water for 6 months

Hope this made for interesting reading anyways Thaya

Thaya,

That sucks, sorry to hear it. But, you'll be back surfing before you know it!
And, "he" showed up at the hospital and with a present. You are so in.

 Oh my god what can i say, i'm totally shocked!!!

That really is crappy news and i hope you have a real speedy recovery, i guess it could have been worse and at least you were somewhere with life guards to take care of you, otherwise who knows :?

Have you got lots of surf DVD's and books to keep up the stoke? If not i can copy all of mine for you and send them down to you to kill at least a few hours in bed...

Hmm dont know what else to say really, just look after yourself and dont feel guilty for needing to relax.

Phil, why didn't I read this before.... I took my own advice, and now I'm ready to jump off a cliff cause I don't have a car, and it's the middle of the night, so i can't go for a surf anyway!

Commisserations Thaya!

Do what the medicos tell you - especially regarding cold (for the first 48 hours) and heat (after that 48 hours). I'd also be making sure the painkillers are anti-inflammatory.

On top of that make sure you get yourself to a Physiotherapist (only if it's soft tissue injury - usually the case with shoulder injury) and an Acupuncturist as soon as the doctors allow.

Hopefully that'll help you get moving normally again as soon as possible, with minimal long term damage.

Took four months for my shoulder (left shoulder, BTW) to recover last time.

I really hate shoulder injuries.

Aw Thaya that sucks big time :(

I know all about shoulder injuries fleshin' things up - its been nearly 18 months since I buggered my shoulder up, I got calcifying tendonitis in my left shoulder which led to one of the tendons tearing. Started off with the shoulder just hurting, which got worse and worse, couldnt sleep on my back or left side and woke up if I rolled over in my sleep. Ended up losing the feeling in my arm (arm would give out and couldnt pick anything up and hold thing) intermittently and then altogether. Had an operation in May and have been seeing the physio since, as I still havent got much strength in my left arm (its currently about half what it should be), still drop things and still go numb. Every so often the physio tapes my shoulder down (starting just above my boob and going half way down my back to pin it down and restrict movement) for two weeks at a time.

Like everyone else has said - listen to the docs, listen to the physio, dont put too much pressure on yourself and try to chill out a bit.

As for the ex, short sharp kick to the balls

Hope you feel better soon :)

Actually a well swung open palm is pretty much guaranteed to hurt more. Force concentrated over the bridge of the foot is more likely to hit only one testicle (or in between them). A spread palm is almost guaranteed to squash both.

Besides, a spread palm is sneakier and harder to see coming ;)

Hang on... Why do I get the feeling I shouldn't be telling you this?!

Well... This is what we teach in the self defence classes at my Kung Fu academy.

Then we get guys to put on boxes and have the girls practice from various angles and positions. And some of those still hurt!

Should probably give the usual disclaimer - you shouldn't do this except in an actual situation where physical confrontation or violence is unavoidable ;)

Thanks guys and gals. You've cheered me up no end! Still in unbearable pain though. Discovering the joys of prescription drugs and morphine. Just had another trip to the doc's. I'm so lucky it's next to an internet cafe! I can pop in and "see" you all every now and again. Having my operation on thursday. Feelin a bit stressed cuz i have such a bad track record with these sort of things. Oh well. Gonna lay down in a semi-conscious daze and dream about surfing until it's over with! (Then I'll watch all those DVDs Libby!) x

Hope you are feeling better now. Shoulder injures are a definate pain. I have an ongoing injury from about 5 or 6 years ago, from when I swam in college, but not from swimming :) , from doing pullups. The pain comes and goes, and when it comes it is very painful. I have seen people make amazing recoveries from shoulder injuries, just make sure you keep up with your physical therapy and do any exercises that they tell you to do at home.
Good luck.. :D
