Waterproof digi or standard cam' ??

Postby CheeZee » Sat Jul 08, 2006 10:29 am

Hi all ,

Im looking to buy a quality entrance level waterproof camera but cannot decide if i need a digi or standard cam ..so im hoping you lot can chuck some weight to my decision making :D

Digi cams are obviously more expensive than standard cams' but have the ease of image transfer to a pc' ...

but standard waterproof cams are cheaper and i will get a lot more for my money ...

any pro's or cons for either that you guys can chuck at me would be much appreciated 8)

thanks all ... CheeZer ASP .. Aspiring Surf Photographer

(hehehe thanks matt ... i like that )

DIGITAL ALL THE WAY!!!! only cause when you take pictures of us, I want them posted ASAP! hhehe
I personally wouldn't buy a normal camera cause I can't be bothered with taking pics to be developed, puttin more film in, etc

Deffinately digital for quality. And yes you can just go to a camera store and ask them if they can do housing for your own digital camera - see if they can do it that size.

that would be the best way i would have thought but a new digi cam and specific housing would cost at least £300 ish for a basic entry level camra + housing

Housing is deffinately the cheapest method if you already have a digital camera. These proper underwater digital cameras that the pro's use are waaaaaay over-priced!

This is the one I was looking at...
digi camera

Basically a reasonable quality digi camera (so land pics are okay) with a reasonable degree of waterproofing - up to couple of metres for 30 mins, so wouldnt be good for diving and taking pictures of coral reefs but would be fine for taking surf shots. :D

Think I'll be getting something along those lines 8)

If youre going for a point and shoot waterproof digital, stay away from Pentax - theyre prone to leaking and the Pentax warranty is void as soon as you take it in the water, which is totally ridiculous.

i was looking at this a while back for scuba diving

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canona95/

camra would set you back around £170

then the housing that sets you back around £130

I'd also recommend digital.

Since I got a digital camera, I've gotten some of the best pics I've ever taken! (not waterproof, but I think the same concept still applies)

When I was taking shots on film, I tended to be to careful not to waste film. (A bad shot costs you twice - once for film and once for processing).
With digital, I just snapped away with no worries, deleting anything that didn't turn out.
Result: Awsome pics I would have otherwise missed!

That being said, If you do go the inexpensive route, this is a point and shoot that caught my eye.
I'm easily impressed by wrist bands I guess.

film is better but for most people who dont have access to a darkroom to develop their own pictures free, and change contrast, etc, digital is better because you can add contrast on the computer. also you can see the pictures right there and decide to take another one if your finger was in the way or whatever.. when with film you dont know about those changes you could have made until its too late.

Well, I have a Canon EOS 350D with a fantasea waterproof case and a zoom and wide angle lense.

Unfortunately it was very expensive. The camera cost $700 and the case $1000..argh Skint!

It takes great photo's and is the best camera I have ever had.

(It's digital by the way)

Waterproof, and has good reviews :D

And cheap enough, that if you lose it in the surf, you wont be too gutted :?

You have a great set up. It is a shame a good housing cost more than the camera, but you get what you pay for. I have a little Canon IS S2, and love it. I don't take it in the water thou.

I recomend didgital for what it's worth. Much more managable and easier to deal with. I use a waterproof Olympus and it was very wise investment. You don't have much to worry about either because most manufacturers will warranty them.
