Damn Leash!!

Postby Laguna » Fri Jun 23, 2006 12:23 am

Ok , I went surfing this evening and the surf was alright, about 2-4ft bit messy, but the waves were rideable.
Anyhow I paddled out back and duck dived under this wave and when I got up I fell off my board sideways. When using my feet to sink the bottom of the board my leash had turned facing the inside leg and I had somehow got the leash wrapped around my right leg once then my left leg once and finally my right leg again..
There was no part in the leash that was slack, and I just couldnt move or touch the bottom of the sea. I was being pumpled a few times by the oncoming waves, it was crazy. Never had it that bad, thought I was going to drown lol.
Anyone else had trouble like this with their leash? I always managed to get my legs tangled in it, especially when im passing over a wave and it knocks me.

I've only been surfing for 2 weeks, and I've had my legs tangled in the leash many times. I've never had it so bad that there was no slack...but it's definitely gotten to the point where I couldn't use my legs and was being plowed by a wave, not knowing which way is up. There probably nothing scarier in surfing than not knowing which way the surface is...

I have minor trouble quite often but once when I wiped out off one wave I came to the surface and I found the leesh had managed to tie my legs together. I proceeded to get hit by another wave as I frantically tried to untie it. After the second wave I did free myself but I was quite worried for a moment as I couldnt actually move either of my legs, so I kinda know how you must have felt.

wee trick with leashes that do this,

take the leash off the board & tie it up to stretch the kinks out - say between two branches of a tree or something, enough to tension the urethane cord. I do this with all new leashes straight out of the wrapper and it works great... Leave it in the sun for an hour or two. Then when you put the leash back on the board don't wrap it tight around the tail of your board. Just leave it loose

the cord will be straighter & won't kink up again.

LOL, I dont know how you managed to ever stand up with it on your leading foot. Glad you caught on in the end

Thanks for the advice Brent I will give it a go to try and make my leash less tangly.

one time after a bad wipeout, the leash wrapped around my neck, it was the most scariest thing that ever happened to me :(

Yesterday my leash annoyed me and tried drowning me, and today it saved my board hitting someone. This idiot took off on the same wave as me and he started turning into my path , so I had to jump off and pull my leash back otherwise it would have hit him.

Back in the bad ole preleash days your board would have hit him, he would have been hurt (alittle) and learned to NEVER NEVER drop in on someone ever again....
Hmmm, makes you think doesn't it?

Ha ye, I couldnt understand what he was doing. He was on a swell board though and looked like he was learning so I didnt really get annoyed with him.

also you should disconnect your leash from your board and hang it up, especially if your not gonna be using it for a while. I never bother tho, and thats probably why my leash is always tangled. :?

I was at a surf competition today (watching only) it was a pro-am division. In the 30 minute final round, with around 5 minutes left this guy catches a wave, wipes out, and because he has no leash, loses his board. He was unable to get back out to where the wave were until there was about a minute left, and no more good waves. He ended up missing 3-4 good waves in that time period. :(
