Aight guys, i'm about 5' 10" and i will be surfin the jersey shore (Belmar) for my first time ever. I wanna know what a good board is and height and all that to get started learning on Oh and extra i really want to ride a short board my friends say long boards are faggy but idk so thenks for the help.

what i would do is go with a board that you will us for a long time. i'm also 5'10" and weigh 155 lbs, and i ride a 6' board, it's what i started on. i started sept 05, and at first it was realy hard but if you go every day or almost every day then you'll be up and surfing in a few days. it took my three full days at the beach to get up and surf a wave but that was fine with me( they were three consecutive days). the shorted the board the more time you'll spend falling off. if you're not planing on this approach then i would say 6'10".

First of all, I'd get some new friends, then I'd get some independent opinions of my own. Once I'd done that, I'd think about getting a suitable beginners board

I hate longboards, tried one once and couldnt get on with it at all, guess its personal preference. Still i know one day i may be too old and creaky to shortboard so i might have to get used to em at some point. I suppose they do have their good points (severn bore, long rides on slow point breaks etc.)

I also hate andy irons (actually ive never met him but in a lot of interviews ive seen he comes across as a bit of a moaner)

I think longboards are a load of fun. As for Andy Irons, I dont like him either. He cant take it when he looses and talks like a nob

I've never been on a longboard myself, but sometimes when it's too small or weak for my shortboard, I borrow a friend's mini mal, which I actually quite enjoy for a really chilled out surfing experience!

yeah, but my job isnt to go around the world getting paid thousands of dollars to surf in the best surfing locations known to man

I'm not saying the man should moan, etc but there's a bit more to these guys than that. They have to surf to the best of their ability in the conditions presented to them for one.

And they have to work damn hard for their sponsors too. I know most people would laugh at me for saying this, but still. Can you imagine when you're really tired, but you actually HAVE to surf because you've got a photo shoot for this month's Surfer's Bible in Oz, then after that, leaving for South Africa, for a Chiemsee shoot, then making sure each brand has the shots they want, then flying to Indo for some training, then getting a call from wifey/gf (or both!) saying the baby's been born, etc

Can't be that easy being a professional surfer!

Can you imagine when you're really tired, but you actually HAVE to go to work because your bills and rent are overdue, the bailiffs are coming, you have to get your work done by the weekend so you can go surf in 2ft slop etc. etc.

that was meant a little tongue in cheek, but really i dont think they have much to moan about, most of the wct guys have a really good attitude and do realise how lucky they are, and like i said i dont know andy irons, the interviews ive seen may have just caught him on a bad day or a bad moment or something.

no, as I mentioned before, I'm not saying the man should moan, but I'm just saying that going around the world getting paid thousands of dollars isn't as easy as it seems. And AI seems to be a bit of a knob to me anyway, I agree with you. I hope that if I'm ever that good, I don't turn into a showing off, smug flesher!

they obviusly enjoy what they do, i would too. who in the world would hate having surfing as your career?? going to the best surf spots in the world, surfing day in day out, and by what i've seen in surf mags and videos, they surf by day, party by night!!

the only thing they'll be moaning about is getting up at 4am with a hang over

where did I say pro surfers hate it? If you took the time to read my post, buddy, you would realise that what i'm saying is that it's not as fun as it's cracked up to be. I surf to relax, have fun with friends, and forget about things that bother me. For these people, it is their jobs to surf! I'm not saying they don't enjoy it.... in fact it's gotta be one of the coolest jobs in the world. In fact I'm not going to repeat myself... read previous posts.
