yeah, but you have to know what to paddle at. I guarantee that nothing is like surfing you've ever done. I played football 6 days a week, and lift 5 of those, and played ultimate frisbee on the 7th day, and still surfing was just....hard.

But I'm not here to tell you don't do it by any means, give it a shot. Just remember your options if you decide surfing is a thing for you.

Where are you gonna be surfing?

I love keeping active, going to the gym and all sports and I agree that surfing is very hard. Paddling hard constanty really ache's your arms, back and neck like nothing else. Its something you just have to keep practicing to get better at

Ah, I could feel the pain in my neck my first day.. haha. Yeah it will be tough... but when I like something I stick to it.

I dont really know of many places around here, but probably mostly the Peir at Jax Beach and maybe Hannah Park

How on earth could somebody possibly get sick of a longboard? and why all of a sudden is everyone so eager to get a shortboard?
Well you can learn on any board you want to. Im just saying its a lot easier and more rewarding by starting with a longer board.

Everyone's always been eagar to buy a shortboard....it's the cool thing...duhh...

They're cool because it's what the average stereotypical pro uses, therefore advertising and media uses it, and therefore, it's cool. (although rather impractical for most)

What people don't understand is that the pros are surfing waves that are great, awesome sized, clean waves. They also don't realize that pros are usually incredibly small. Take Rob Machado for instance, he's like 130 lbs and 5'8". Most pro surfers are usually under 150. I haven't even mention that they have decades of experience and the know-how of surfing, and the physical endurance.

Ahhh.....another shortboards aren't for new people rant.

Whatever, see how it goes, give it thought. And whoever said it was a waste of money, that was completely irrational. They will boost the learning curve so much it's incredible. And they are extremely easy to sell. I went to sell a shortboard I've out grown at a big local shop that basically takes anything and he told me "It's a shortboard? Forget it, I've already got 150 of them, and I've only got like 1 funboard. Bring me a funboard and I'll sell it for good money for you."

Yeah, and look at used boards, they are generally fine. Learn to do your own repairs, and fix one up. Lots of used boards hardly need any fixing to begin with.

I dont ride a shortboard because its the cool thing, I ride it out of necessity. Riding a longer board sucks because you cant do xxxxx on it and you get beat up in bigger surf. and that stuff about pros being lighter is one thing, (Im definitely not a pro) but im 6'1 185 and I ride a 6'5. only been surfing 2 and half years. If you have skills then you should start on a shorter board. If you are all clumsy then get a longboard. ha

Here we go again the great longboard vs. Shortboard debate  .

They are different. Neither is better than the other. I would still agree from personal experience that bigger boards are better for learning. I am 5'3" and am learning on a 7' funboard and there have been days, even on that that i have wished i was on a bigger board. Yes i have tried shortboards (2 or 3 of Brents) and i have had no success with them. I'm not saying its impossible but as a rule its going to make things difficult.

Also i think one of the problems is that people think they are going to 'outgrow' a minimal or funboard in a few weeks. I think people need to realise that learning to surf (for the vast majority of people) takes years not days or weeks.

And you dont 'outgrow'a longboard, there are heaps of pro longboarders or talented freesurfers who ride longboards. You may change styles but thats different altogether.

I agree with Lagune, DBB etc. bgdkmetzger2003 remember that not everyone spends there free time doing weights and eating raw eggs, and what works for you therefore probably doesnt work for the 'average' guy, and also just because you cant do cr_ap on a longboard doesnt mean that nobody else can.

My next board will be a 9' nose rider and then hopefully soon after that a 6'4-6'6.

and all that crap about not being able to do stuff on longboards is BS.

Go watch some longboarding videos. I highly doubt you can do some noseriding yoga on your shortboard, followed by a full wrap around cut back and then trim through a flat spot and air of a closing out wave.

On a 9'0" board.

Also very true. It takes years to progress to a good level

Libby's on a roll, like I said you cant outgrow a longboard

This happened to me, went out on friends longboards for months, thought i was ready for a short board so i bought a 6'4", had no fun, could barely catch a wave. Then went out an got myself a 7'0" (still not a LONGBOARD as such i know!!) and started carving up after a couple of weeks.

Im only small, 5'2" and about 110-120 pounds and i struggled on a shortboard to start....

the thing is, none of us will probably ever see each other surf anyways. so I guess this argument doesnt much matter. i think this thing has gotten a little out of hand (since i guess ive been told by five people). all I can say is, i dont know where you guys surf or what level you are at, but you have to respect that maybe Im coming from a different angle. I surf a shortboard in overhead waves routinely. maybe you guys do too, I dont know. if you dont, im not saying you suck, but you got to be either crazy or really good to surf a longboard overhead waves. hey 15 year old kid, do you wanna surf like a cook on a longboard in little waves, or surf on a shortboard in good sized waves?

Mate, a good thing to learn is to be able to respect other peoples views and opinions. Just accept that because some people do things differently to you or think differently to you, doesn't mean they are wrong.
They're just different
It doesnt matter what board they ride or what size waves they ride. The most important thing is that they have fun............and from here it sounds like they do 8)

You earn respect. And seen as neither of us is going to see how the other surfs then its going to be based purely on what kind of attitude you put across on this forum.

And the other thing; getting arsey about being a shortboarder actually makes you sound like an angry 13 year old. You dont see the experienced guys on this forum who have been surfing for 15+ years mouthing off do you?
