watch the way kelly slater surfs, he always seems to generate loads of speed without all the pumping adn jumping up and down on the board, but if you watch his back foot hes always moving it anticipatiing the next section, trimming along a wave youll often see him move it forward of the pad onto the board and then move it back just before he pulls in a tight turn.
Not saying that you should be running around the board all the time but try different placements to see what works for you and your setup.

Funny that you would say that because I was just watching his newer dvd. Your right, he gets a lot of speed just from the take off. TO me it looks like he always picks a good line in the wave from the start. That's what ive been working on, trying to generate more speed from takeoff. Also, im leaning more towards speed as the most important rather than foot placement you know? I mean, its important but if you get a lot of speed then you can pretty much stand wherever you want you know?

trouble is kelly slater has massive natural talent and years of experience of surfing every day at the best breaks in the world. Also he sold his soul to the devil in exchange surfing skill and has the power to control waves using his secret mind techiniques, we can never expect to be that good :(
But getting speed form good trim and use of the wave is a much more stylish way to surf than these guys who just bounce up and down on their boards imho, and thats at least what i aim for myself.
Biggest problem i had when i was learning was keeping speed throught the first bottom turn, i used to take off and be so pleased with myself that i made the drop that i lost momentum before i turned, nowadays im much smoother - already setting my line for the bottom turn as i take off and looking at the section ahead planning what im aiming for further down the face, usually working out how im gonna avoid the guy dropping in futher down
