How often do you clean your board?

Postby Laguna » Sun Apr 30, 2006 11:59 am

I know a lot of surfers, including me sometimes can never be bothered to clean their board/s but I think after about 4-5 times of going surfing your going to have to clean all the wax off. With me the wax just looses its grip after every session and you cant just put more wax on over the old wax because it doesnt work well.

Ive noticed to how dirty the old wax starts to get after a few sessions.
So on average how often does everyone clean their boards?

I find it takes a fair few weeks for me to even get a half decent layer of wax (applied after rinsing my kit at home). I last took all the wax off about 50-60 sessions ago and am finding I have no issues with grip. Can't say I've noticed any dirty wax either. There's a few grains of sand lodged in it but it's all still white.

As for the "you cant just put more wax on over the old wax because it doesnt work well" I'd have to guess you may be using a different wax.

I have a bit of a cocktail on my stick but it's mostly composed of zoggs warm water and some super sticky Mrs Palmers. If you give your board a quick rinse with the hose when you do the rest of your stuff you'll not get the salty residue that builds up and may have something to do with your being unable to put fresh wax on top.

Thanks, Im using Mr Zoggs wax all the time and it works great. After I have been in the water the wax wil start to loose some grip and sometimes when re-applying more wax, I find that its not getting much stickier. Anyhow I cant explain how the wax on my rails and underneath my board gets a bit dirty.

Do you hose down your board after every session? Would be a good idea

Cleaning is strictly limited to evenings sitting in the sun after a long session, with a cold beer and the BBQ heating up  :D

Yeah I usually just give it a quick rinse after doing my wetsuit and let it sun for a bit before it gets bagged and retired to the garage. I noticed that if I don't a slightly slick layer of salt forms all over the wax proving somewhat detrimental to traction. :?

Forgot to ask. Hairdryers. I have heard som people say they use them to get the wax off the board, and I have used this method, but im sure I heard somewhere that it can damage the board. Is this true?

I think a haridryer should be alright really, just be careful.

Every 4-5 times you surf?! Thats alot of time cleaning your board.

Brent's real anal no no thats not the right word ummmm "particular" about clean boards  (in a nice way of course-means i always have a sparkly white board and nice clean wax :D ) but even he doesnt do it anything like every 4 or 5 times he surfs. I chuck some more wax on every couple of surfs but i dont take the whole lot off and start again.

Okay maybe 4-5 times is an exaggeration, but at this point I feel the need to scrape off all the old wax and put some new wax on. After about 5 sessions putting new wax on just doesnt grip on as much. Lately I have been lazy though and cant be bothered to clean my board. Im sure I will get lazyer

Please tell me I'm reading this wrong! You're NOT waxing the sides and under side of your board are you???

I only remove all of the wax about twice a year. Once in spring/summer to change from cold water wax to warm water wax, and once in the fall/winter to change from warm to cold.

Otherwise just add more every so often and/or put a wax comb to it to rough it up some...

No I dont wax underneath my board lol, that would be stupid. I wax my rails where I place my hands to duck dive. What I meant was my rails get a bit dirty and so does parts of the underneath of my board.
