this should prob be in the surfing lessons category rather than travel....but try maybe practice with skateboarding or one of those balance/indo board thingys.

Go stand on a boat like karatekid.

No serious, I don't think there is such a thing as a training for improved balance. Just try to surf as much as you can and balance will follow naturally, since it also involves feel for water.

Balance is a combination of quick reflexive response to changing environment and the right muscle tone to correct for it. I guess the only real way you are going to improve is by practicing and getting wet.

When you are riding never bail, even if you are losing it, do everything you can to saty on your feet for as long as possible by shifting your weight and moving you feet to improve balance (obviously this doesn't apply if you're just about to have a thick lip smash down on you!). Also try and stay loose, keep you back straightish and verticalish (not hard and fast rules - being natural is more important) and bend a little at the knees and use legs to absorb movements - don't bend too much though or you'll look like your're sitting on the dunny!!

I had roughly the same problem :( Until i bought an indo board. Since that day my surfing has improved dramatically as you learn not to over compensate when falling one way by putting to much pressure in the opposite direction. (I hope that make sense).
Their is a real handy section for making an indo style board on here some where which I found about 2 weeks after buying 1
The sweet thing about balance boards is you can use them almost all the time when at home and their a great party piece for your drunk freinds to fall off for your amusment

Have it in your living room and stand on it when you watch telly, brush your teeth, waiting for the kettle to boil... in no time at all your balance will have improved hugely :D

I find that yoga helps with balance and developing muscles in a way similar to how they're used in surfing. For balance, what you would see described as vinyasa or "flow" style classes would probably be the most helpful.

To improve balance strengthen your core muscles (i.e. stomach, lower back etc.).
You could do this by kneeling on an excercise or swiss ball. This will get your balance up to speed as well as strengthen your stomach muscles and lower back.
Watch TV when you do this!!!!!! :D

hold your left ear, stand on one leg & resight mary had a little lamb 15 times a day. this should increase your balance immensely.. Alternatively, you could try what ET suggested.

how about you make an indoboard, about £6 for the wood and £10 for the pipe (unless you knick it) though seeing as your in the states it would be seriously cheaper.
