Had a go at it this morning! Flipping amazing... we got in at the Severn Bore Inn and paddled across to the opposite bank to wait for the wave. There was a huge crowd of spectators and photographers and even helicopters and planes overhead. Nobody knows exactly when it's coming so you have to get in early (brrr) there were about 20-25 of us in the water I think, including this old local pro with an enormous board he'd obviously made himself for bore-surfing (about 12 feet long with a huge upturned nose). After about half an hour this speedboat and a jetski come tearing around the corner ahead of the wave, closely followed by a *huge* wall of water bombing upstream towards us. The sheer power of the thing is pretty scary - it's pretty much ripping along the banks throwing water 10ft into the air. The wave peaked at well over head-high and everyone cheered as the local caught it right on the peak and dropped down the face. Unfortunately almost everyone else came straight off the back of the wave - you really need a very long board and have to judge the right part of the river to try and catch it (the wave isn't really steep enough near the middle). It's really bizarre watching the river flowing backwards afterwards.
Pretty stung that we missed it we all jumped back on the road and made for a spot further upstream but unfortunately the bore wasn't rideable there. But all in all, an incredible sight and now I can say I've surfed a tidal wave
