eating raw eggs for performance!!!

Postby bgdkmetzger2003 » Mon Mar 27, 2006 6:42 am

this will be interesting. what does everyone think about eating raw eggs?? I just started eating them a week or so ago. Its a very quick and easy way to get full and get some protein. I am well aware of the chances of getting sick but it has not happened yet and what I have read says that I dont have a good chance of getting sick. I think the benefits outweigh the downsides.

Truth??? I think you've watched Rocky once too often...sorry.

Why not just eat a nice steak, some chicken, an omlette or whatever.
Nobody says eating protein has to be unpleasant.

Getting protein shakes from a health food store is easier, nicer and a lot less likely to give you salmonella!

you dont want protein for surfing, protien would be more suited if you were trying to build your mussles up id go for high carb foods bananas, nuts, cereal bars, they will give you far more energy while surfing

Protein isnt much good while surfing (slow release carbs for that, as suggested), but they are good for after surfing. Protein is needed for repair of muscles as well as building muscles, so if you're aching after surfing then a protein bar/shake/meal is good for recovery and - hopefully - more strength/endurance next time you are paddling out :D

But a good diet should be enough!

I did a little research before I started doing the raw eggs. I found there is about 1 salmonella egg per 30,000. Not a high chance of getting sick. Also the more you eat the eggs, the more your body becomes immune to the small amount of bacteria that could be in the eggs. Also the eggs are cheaper than a protein shake, and they taste like vanilla if they are fresh! :D

Eat egg whites without the yolk and you get the pure protein without any of the fat - but you do also lose most of the vitamin B . But there are loads of other ways to get protein as well - too much of one thing isn't brilliant for anyone - balanced diet must be best.

I absolutely HATE snotty eggs (boiled or poached, when theres still uncooked egg dribbling about) - theres no way I could even think about putting a raw egg anywhere near my mouth. Eurgh

Dude, word of warning, 96.3% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
As for the Salmonella thing, that'll likely be a global statistic - you'd want local.

Also - COOKING AN EGG DOESN'T REMOVE THE PROTEIN. Like, Duh....? And one of the BEST sources of protein you'll get apart from eggs is fish.

Wanna up your protein intake? Red meat, Eggs (cooked you muppet!) and fish.

well, I have and do eat red meat and fish. I didnt make up that statistic. Explain to me how I could eat 6 scrambled eggs and still be hungry a little bit later while I can eat 2-3 raw eggs and be full for a while?? They seem to fill me up better. I dare anyone to just try it before you knock it!

You shouldn't need any extra supplements, unless you are pushing your body to the limits...and more protein will only serve to pepair the muscle.

To improve your stamina in the water try weights with 15-20 reps using lightish weights for the arms and running and swimming for general fitness.

Also gram for gram you'll get more protein from Tuna than eggs, and also less fat.

A balanced diet with carbs, protein, and fat should be all the normal athlete should need...

I would say the majority of people on this forum are "normal, average athletes"...

If i was you i'd try adding more Carbs than Protein in your diet for performance in a sport like surfing, you'll be suprised how much energy (carbs) you burn whilst surfing.

Try using "slow" release carbs like Pasta, Rice or Potato's in your diet.

I'm still not convinced with the benefits of raw eggs, but eh, if you find it helps then continue with the "Rocky breakfasts".
