Stupid Tourists in Hawaii

I went to Hawaii this last week (Maui). I have been there many times but this time I was struck by the amount of stupid, fat, midwestern, never-seen-the-ocean-but-ill-give-it-a-try idiots. I found a little reef in a bay where there were a lot of hotels and I was trying to body board it because I couldnt find a surfboard. Then these stupid idiots come out a couple at a time and think they can just do the same thing. For one thing the reef was about 2-3 feet below me and two its razor sharp. The tourists saw that and they were out of there shortly after they realized they were risking injury and had no business being out there. But it was so funny how they saw a guy out there so they thought they would try it (like fat midwestern cattle). I think I can see how the locals in Hawaii hate surfers that just come out for vacation (including me). Its not our break and we know nothing about that place unless we live there. But at least Im not someone that has never seen the ocean and then presumes to just swim out to a reef in hawaii.

Another time I was at a body surfing beach (by the way, the northwestern shores of Maui didnt get too much action this last week). So all of these stupid little screaming girls, and some middle age guys that thought they were riding some really big ones, came out with their stupid bodyboards and were screaming with glee at how the little waves would carry them. Little did they know, I have seen that beach with head high walls of water, and I wished it was that big so I could have my fun. I found myself wishing that a sneaker set would come and drown all of those screaming idiots. These people know nothing about the ocean and it is a wonder that more of them dont drown every year!!

the places i surf dont have tourists, they stay on the beach. they might be stupid but theyre not that stupid.

im a pretty nice driver but my road rage tends to gome out whenever i see a tourist in one of their stupid chrystler or mustang convertibles..

my local beach has heaps of tourists -- good ol' Bondi Beach.. I'm up to fin-chop victim number 2 now - i give 3 warnings to body boarders and body surfers now, then i give em a little chop, seems to work. Slowly but surely idiot body boarders won't snake & drop in & those foolish swimmers will go into the flagged areas.

I totally agree with your first point, but this one is just bloody ridicilous.

All I was sayin is that the beach that I used to go to was uncrowded and now it is crowded and it pisses me off. Do you identify with the fat cattle?? I never fin chopped any of them or anything. I didnt bring my surfboard because there wasnt suppose to be much wave action in the area we were staying at. I was only familiar with the spots that you could body board or body surf at.

The point of my post was not that I was better than them, it was that I was upset over the way maui has become more crowded over the years with tourists that have no respect for the ocean. It is sad to see a place that I have gone to for many years become this overcrowded, tourist attraction. And about being on a high horse....I have a lot of respect for other water men. I think that respect has to be earned. For someone that is on a surf forum, Im surprised that you would pick the side of the people that dont surf. I agree everyone should be able to enjoy the ocean but I think that your response is a little harsh. shame on you!

ok...im not sure what you are trying to say here. im not going to get off topic with talking about what type of bodyboards they were using. I actually borrowed one of them and he said it was carbon fiber so I think some rich tourists might have some nice bodyboards. Arrogance huh? Who's more arrogant to the situation? this may be kinda off the topic but anyway..i may visit Hawaii in May, and i dont want to look like a stupid tourist. first of all, im not stupid, and i've been on the ocean most of my life. originally from philippines, an archipelago country, islands always sorrounded by water, and now living in so cal..so im not new to the ocean. i am kinda new with surfing, started last summer, i go about 2-3 times a week, i call myself an advanced kook hehe my question is, which is the best spot for me? im thinking waikiki? but it may be too crowded and im not really into longboarding..is there a tourist-friendly-shortboarding-advanced kook spot somewhere in oahu? thanks so much!!

There are probably good spots on all of the Islands. Just ask someone that lives there to point you in the right direction. when I was on maui the guy that was fixing my fridge told me about some good spots. the north west side of maui is pretty blocked from swell because of lanai and molokai i believe. but there are probably some spots everywhere. that's the beauty of an island, until it gets too crowded with tourists.

go to waikiki and walk east or west. there are breaks all along there. most of the reef breaks that require a paddle out arnt that crowded with tourists. no matter where you go, there are locals looking to start xxxxx with tourists, but if youre flip, youre dark and wont have much trouble. alamoana is west, which has a bunch of breaks, diamond head is up a big hill from waikiki and down a cliff, there is no shore connectiong it to waikiki, but its also nice. both are pretty mellow

yeah, 100% Filipino, and i do have fair skin, so i dont think i have problems blending in, and i could be mistaken for a local, that means i could kick some tourist's ass haha!!

I hate tourist, although where I live has almost NO tourism (definately sucks for the economy, although great for the crack sales!)

anyways, one of my friends started telling me about how great hawaii was and I've gotta go there and I've gotta go snorkeling, and to a luau, and all this tourism junk. It kinda pissed me off to hear that, I'd hate to have to deal with seeing the local point of view of that.

snorkeling is fun though.

but luaus and hula are tourist thing., those were once native hawaiian things, but the white man came over and stole their land, and prostituted their culture off to the tourist industry. horray.

Chill out, we're all tourists.

Ever surf a different break? Ever travel to the surf? Ever go on holiday? Ever go on a surf trip? Yes? Well, then you're a tourist too.

Sure, I get wound up when the water's full of people who havent got a clue what they're doing, but I think its up to me, the surfer, who's supposed to know about which spot's the right spot, to find a break that will work and be relatively crowd-free. Ive only got myself to blame if I go to a 'tourist' or 'family' beach and then end up surfing amongst kids on inflatable rings.

Surprising as it may be to some, as surfers we do not own the ocean.
Kids should be in the water, tourists should be snorkelling, people should be trying out surfing, even if its a one off on a kneehigh wave.
And who's taking up the most space? The guy with his three kids playing in the shore break, or the guy surfing 500 yards across and 200 yards in from out back?

All tourists should, of course, respect the country and environment they're in. And I detest the tourist money-making traps as much as anyone, but its not the tourists setting up the theme parks....

It's a cliche and a stereotype, but surfers are supposed to have laid back souls. I think we're losing that. Let's try and get back to that.

Well..i think i should add something...even though someone is going to argue.

I agree that the ocean is everyones and we should all play nice and share.
BUT, certain surfing and bodyboarding beaches and breaks we shouldnt have to worry about tourists crowding the water..and not doing anything.

Hawaii is getting worse, but I can only tell you that you are a tourist too, and if i saw you in the water with a bodyboard, i would say "gees, more tourists!" (no offense)

Some places you have got to "quietly" tell them when your going to slice them into smitheriens or paddle for wave.

yeah, thats what scares me the most I understand. I guess it's not tourist I hate, it's some of the stuff they do, like leaving trash on the beach. I've got no problem with kids playing in the shorebreak. I guess I was just venting from a bad day on the stereotypical tourist
