10 foot hawiian scale you are going to need a pintail gun. no ifs ands or buts.

well maybe they are some-

but remember that huge conversation that we had on the first couple pages of this post? Pipe can be huge, but its not that huge usually.

on a small pipe day, yeah you could probably pull it, depending on the width(?) and the amount of nose rocker(?) that's on that board.

White plain?! almost. But the east coast doesnt usually go off, and only when there is a good swel you can pick it up! Its worth the travel to look for some spots, but try to pick the ones without people on.

And for the board, a gun/rhino chaser! That board wont get you out of a tight situation. When you start to advance, try surfing on something like 6ft (HS) with a semi-gun. There you wont just be thrown in the deep end.

Another point is, hav you ever tried to duck dive a gun? Now thats hard! I stil have trouble with my 6 10 shorty! When a big wave comes, and you cant duck dive with a board like taht, your screwed!

The board high 7'0, width 19.28, thickness 2.59...

I don't think I can go big waves with this too But this is the only board I have. I need to spend more money on buying a gun.. I'm kinda broke right now..

I'm not too worry about duck dive. I can duck dive this board. I have tried to duck dive it from 2 foot up to 5 foot (hawaiian scale) waves. I don't know if I can still do it for any bigger waves.

I'm thinking of having my gun custom made by Kimo Greene in the future. Have you heard of him??? He is a surfboard shaper. I often have him repair my board. He does a good job.

Check out his website: http://www.kimogreenesurfboards.com

Who owns a gun here?

Baldie, the best person to ask about what board to ride is Kimo Greene. You need to go and talk to him and all the things you have been asking us he will know better.
Also have you had a proper look at the site you just posted because if you go into the used boards section in the 'shack' there's loads of info on what board does what and why.

I have been following this thread for a while now and I cant believe it has extended to 106 replies.
Ive had to bite my tongue but the time has come to call a spade a shovel say that I have to agree with sup3rc0w's comment a few pages back...Surely this must be a joke.

The original question wasnt stupid but who is fooling who here.

Baldie...one thread your asking "should you ride pipe", next thread "is my board big enough for 10 to 15 foot (hawaiian scale)" and then "how do I turn" ????????????????

You claim to be a "beginner newbie" in one post and now, before you know it, your getting a custom gun shaped for you ...please give us a break..

Perhaps your next post should be "Do I need a reality check"

I keep following this thread too... but only 'cos no-one is chatting about anything else!

I think the most you can get from this thread is that newbies dont judge wave-scale like experienced surfers

Wel/..if you "experienced surfers" were clever enough to read some of the posts, you would have noticed he want to eventually advance to Pipe.

so dont get at him...its ony a post!!!

Don't be like that dude. There's no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers. And I think that post qualifies.

If you want a DUMB question look back a bit for my "Where IS mavericks?" thread.

The guy had a genuine question, and I've learned a lot from reading peoples answers, as I'm sure has he.

Never said it was Dumb, but if someone lives in Hawaii, surely they should know some basics regarding big surf etc.
And as someone mentioned earlier, that he mentioned that he wants to progress to pipeline, well sorry, its bloody easy to miss a post in a thread that is 7 pages long.
Also, it would take a while to "progress" to pipeline, and actually, come to think of it..... the thread title does say "Should I try Pipeline???"

You're right, I'm doing a reality check about surfing here. I lived in Hawaii for more than 10 years now but I hardly touched the beach until recently. I only swam in the beach less than 30 times in all these years. I did other sport like tennis but never the beach. I hated the beach. One of my friend took me surfing 6 months ago in Waikiki. I loved it instantly. I just bought a board from HIC and started surfing in Diamond Head with one of my friend who didn't know anything about surfing. Took us a month to stand on the board.

After I was able to stand up, I immediately went to North Shore and tried the bigger waves (3 to 6 foot hawaiian scale). I was pearling big time. When I was managed to stand up, then the lip of the waves just slammed on me like rocks. hurt like hell. I didn't know I needed to make a turn after I stood up.

People thought I was crazy. I didn't know the waves could be this powerful and deadly. I thought it was just water. I didn't know there were different boards for different waves. I didn't know surfboards were fragile. I didn't know I needed to go out by a channel. I didn't know I needed to watch out for the reefs. I heard many people talked about Pipeline and I thought they were talking about a club in Honolulu (there is a real club named Pipeline in Honolulu). I didn't know it was a very famous surf spot and dangerous. Basically, I didn't know ANYTHING. Nobody told me because I didn't have any surfer friends. This forum was probably the only place I got all the information.

drowningbitbybit said, "is that newbies dont judge wave-scale like experienced surfers." It's very ture. Surfing is more complicated than I thought.

I thank you all for giving many information and comments. I'm glad I found this site. I learned a lot from this forum. I think this forum is fun and helpful. I will keep asking questions even if they sound dumb to some of you.

Yes, I had talked to him about getting a gun. He said the best way to learn how to surf in the North Shore is to have a good board. He would customize one for me but I'm kinda broke right now.

Now I'm thinking Kimo is seeing $$$ :x ! He sounds like he's talking bollox now. He should realize that you are still very new to surfing and will progress pretty quickly way beyond any board that will suit you now, and so its not worth shelling out $ for something custom made for you cos you will out grow it and then have to sell it to someone else - which will suck for them cos its custom shaped for you... supposedly  .

My advice would be get a second hand board next cos its cheaper and you won't keep it for long. What you need to do is try loads of different boards so you find out what you like and what works for you. Its really not worth coughing up good $ for a board unless you know what you need/want.
Bassically it makes about as much sense as buying expensive, made to measure designer clothes for a 7 yr old...

Hmm... bit of a rant, but I dunno, just seems off. What do you all think? :?

This bit's so true!
Lots of people starting out seem to have made the decision, "I will be a long/short boarder", and want to get a board they think is appropriate.
But how do you know what you surf like until you can surf? :?

As an example - me and my mate (same height, same build), when we started surfing, surfed together, surfed the same breaks, were both dead keen on shortboarding (including an ill-advised purchase or a pair of short boards). Years later, he surfs longboards and doesnt get on with shortboards, and I surf shortboards because I cannot surf longboards.

Let your style and experience dictate what boards you surf (and where, and how) not some notion of what you should be doing picked up from watching Big Wednesday or BIllabong Odyssey....

My friend and I started surfing at the same time. He is thinking of getting a short board and I'm thinking of getting a gun... Not right now, maybe the end of the year or earlier. I wanted to surf big waves and he wanted to do more tricks on the waves. I don't know what kinda tricks he can do. But let see how much we improve. It seems like we have different interest. I don't know about shortboard, seems hard.

Kimo Greene wanted $$$. This had come across my mind. That's why I'm still thinking.

The used board over here is kinda expensive. I can get a new board by putting $100 to $150 more or so. The real cheap used boards are yellow, brown and beaten up.

youre crazy baldie. i got my epoxy ratboy for 300 used. now its beaten up and i still love it, but back then it was perfect. retail = 500 if youre lucky.

a label and a bumper sticker would have cost me 200 if i bought it new.

ever been to blue hawaii (kapahulu, but dont get repairs done there, they suck.) or surf n sea? their used boards are great.

used guns especially are cheap. i just sold my 8 fppt, 18 inch gun for 50 bucks. thats all the place would give me, and the other place offered 20. it was old and oxydizing but perfect minus a repaired ding.. no one wants guns. they suck. if youre going for a gun, BUY IT USED THIS SUMMER.
