you could give Peahi a shot...

before you are doing pipe, beable to connect your turns, get in the barrel in all ways, and feel comfortable on 4-5 foot hawaiian scale waves. until you're whistlin' dixie on the other breaks that I don't know off the top of my head (ie: not pipe, wiamea, sunset, bascially the ones that people like me that don't have what it takes to surf hawaiian waves)

Puaena Point? is that kinda pronounced "kaiena point"? Pronuncuation is not my thing....(I had no idea how to say teahpoo for so long)

Yea..pipeline isn't just riding the wave, its reading the wave. Its a very unpredictable wave when your on. It could close out and cream you ar any second!

Once you can barell into a wave, and learn how to pull out, and have had years of experience, you can try Pipe!

As for peahi...the king of waves...Mr. Jaws himself..HA, I have only seen that stuff on TV and videos! Its just..
I think that Peahi breaks on lava reef as well..or maybe just rocks, so probably not a good one...ooh did I forget to mention the 60ft towering hollow waves? :D

ooh yea..Puaena Point..been a while. North shore fav among up and coming surfers, or everybody that has there own board!

Its a nice wave when the swell is up, and makes some hollow lefts, but breaks on some pretty nasty rocks. Its pretty shallow at low-tide and could give you a nice scar! I think on a good days swell it can be overhead (6-7ft, or 4-6 hawaiian), but on a normal swell about 4-5ft or 3-4ft hawaian.

I dont think North Shore is the best place to learn on, but talk to some friends, get them to drag you around some waves.

Also, wat type of wave are you looking for? You're not a complete begginer so no piddlers. Something that you can tube? Or some learning easy's?

Kinda of a dream. If you find some nice "locals" then its great fun, BUT you hav a real problem with crowds. Its like waiting in line for a piece of heaven.!

no....no not brokeback surf break! :o

anyways, not to sound like a chauvenistic pig, but its the truth. If you are hot, there will be no localism. if you aren't then still, you wouldn't have it near as bad as I would.

Reading waves is so difficult. I seemed to not able to read waves. I always paddle too late or something. I usually ride the waves right after it breaks.

Maybe sitting and watching on the beach for 10-15 mins might help. Try to look for Rips, where the waves break, wich wave in a set looks the best, and other things. That gives you a great idea before you go out, and helps to position yourself to surf!

I went to Diamond Head yesterday and it was pretty good. Pretty big waves, like 3 to 4 foot Hawaiian scale. But the water is so shallow, I scratched my middel pin in the reerfs.

I'm a beginner surfer. But I don't think I can really learn surfing if I don't get a good spot for breaking waves. I'm scared to go to the line up because I don't want to drop into people's waves and it's usually very crowded. Now, I kinda stay on the side. I caught waves that were broken with nobody surfing on it.

I wanted to go into the line up. Don't really know how to "fight" for waves.

Never fight for a wave, you'll probably lose :?

Be in the right spot so you can take off quickly on it, and so that its 'your' wave. Dont back down - if its your wave and someone is paddling for it, paddle harder, get up on it, and call it as your wave.
Once you're up and riding, its their responsibility to get out of your way, not your responsibility to miss them (... within reason... )

It all comes with experience and knowing where you need to be, and what to do when its your turn.

And while you're learning, inevitably you'll miss out on waves that should have been yours. Dont get angry, dont go home, just wait for the next one and make as much of it as you can :D

I've heard that there are some nasty locals surfing at Pipeline. Is that true???

Surely this thread is a joke ?
