As far as board size: This is just my opinion, but when I first started I always wished I had started on a smaller board. Everyone will tell you, you should start on a bigger board. Someone in a surf shop might take a look at you and recommend a board size for you, based on your size and weight, and how long you have been surfing. But he doesnt know how often you will go, or how quickly you might get better. You might find that you'll regret having to buy a smaller board once you get better. Plus you might get better fast, which is what happened to me. It all depends on how into surfing you think you will be, and how often you will be surfing. It also depends on the wave size that you will be surfing, and how agile you are already. You might want to just get that shortboard despite what everyone says and just work on getting good at it right away. If you are just going to surf once in a while (maybe once a week) then forget everything I just said. haha

truth be told most people will recoment a long board, 9'0+. they are stable. boyant and realy easy to paddle. well that's what i've been told. i didn't start on a short board, but it was a 7'6 funboard. i've been surfing since sept. 1, 05. i'm not going to go pro. but i have surpast all my friends that started in 05. in other words bgdk... (well you know the rest) has a valid point. the board you get depends apon two things, the style of surfing you want, and you determination. if you realy feel uncomfortable just going out and getting a board then there is this place in huntington that for 20$ you get to try out as many of there boards as you would like, then at the end of the day that 20$ goes toward your purchase.(give me a moment i'm trying to get the name of the place). well i'll get back to you on the name of the place.

Shortboard - very difficult to learn on (not impossible, but why make things harder? And therefore less fun)

Longboard - easy to paddle, but hard to handle.

Somewhere in the middle - mini-mal, funboard. Definitely the easiest place to start, and therefore the most fun :D

But get a real board - not a foamie, or soft-top or any learner rubbish like that

I started on a 6'10. It was a fun board to learn on. The problem I ran into was that I actually started having to duck dive the 6'10. I ended up putting a hole in the middle of the board from my knee. Thats when I got my other shortboard. If you think you will be going in bigger waves, I suggest something you can duck dive easier and that wont drag you if you try to ditch it. It all depends on the waves you subject yourself to!!

sorry can't get the name of that place.

on another note, i met this guy from kansas who came down for the summer and bought himself a shortboard, my guess is around 6'6, and it took him three days to surf. the two first days were filled with frustration and he was ubber stoked on the third day. 0.02$, in the end the choice is yours.

I started from a 7'0 fun board. I think fun board (7'0 to 8'0) is decent board to start. Not too big, easy to carry around for beginners. If you carry a 10' board, you will bang your board and leave it with many dings. Fun board is easy to paddle too. Have Fun....
