Surfing over the weekend, having some troubles.

Postby matty_02 » Mon Feb 13, 2006 12:03 am

Hi guys n girls,

Went for a surf on saturday, was a good day out and all.
But i'm having trouble getting OUT past the breakers, i think my duck diving needs some major practice and also my paddling.

I find that when i paddle i hardly move anywhere, i then find getting off the board and walking gets me out quicker.

i didnt go out past my head, was just catching waves in a little closer, was quite impressed though i got up easily using my mates 6'8 board, i think i'll definately buy something this size.

Any advice on paddling/duck diving (getting out there) would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hey , this is completely normal, you gotta pace yourself and time it right. Paddling is something you have to practice a lot, make sure you do it right as it is cruical (back arched, body straight and big paddles). Getting past the white water, you should keep practice duck diving of course but a Turtle Roll is simpe to do, just turn your board over and lay flat underneath it and hold on tight.

paddlin is all about form, eliminate drag...feet up, body centered on board etc.. when you paddle make the most out of every one...some say cup your hands some say spread your fingers...find out what works best for you...keep it smooth...smooth=fast.....also time when your gona paddle out...go out between sets or go around the outside of the break and then paddle over.... now on to your dive problems...you gotta remmember that duck diving isnt to get you further...its to keep you from getting pumbled and pushed back from the oncommin waves....how big are the waves you are trying to get under? at a point your going to have to put your foot on the tail of the board but thats a lot to type about if thats not your problem...
