ha!
I think it says something that we are all sitting staring at computers talking about surfing rather than actually out there and doing it.

The surf today is about one inch. Maybe two inches on the big sets!!!

Joking aside - we get world class surf here in the UK. A whole mixture of breaks too with a thriving surf community.

The only problem we have is that summer months tend to be pretty flat. Winter months get the decent swell but it is bloody freezing.

Surfing was invented in the UK, back in pre-roman times, the british and irish celts started surfing on mats of woven kelp glued together with sea bird gauno.... Unfortunatly, the romans spoilt all the fun cos they rode jetskis...

It is TRUE - the romans pioneered tow in surfing and dropping in.

Many people think that Hui Nalu means wave riding club in Hawaiian, but it is actually Anglo- Saxon for "Get off my wave, you invading scum!"

Unfortunately Gasoline/ Petrol has always been extortionate in the UK (just like today c. US$5.80 per gallon) and the romans love affair with Jet Skiing was short lived, going underground until it was rediscovered in the early 1980s.

The classic roman shield, made famous by the awesome 'tortoise tank' manoeuvre was discarded in the UK by legionnaires who favoured a new design made with high density foam and a slick plastic bottom. Thus was body boarding born.

The wetsuit was also not invented by Jack O'Neil (a common misconception) but by Ogar the Terrible in 12 A.D. who strapped pieces of leather to his bare skin and headed out to the lineup on a board carved from the stone pits of North Wales. Unfortunately Ogar died of hypothermia and waterlogging shortly thereafter!

This is how it really happened - trust me, I was there!

Cheers

Sinista

PS - The bit about the price of gasoline in the UK is NOT a joke!!

the waters warm in the summer about 17c in the southwest but can get as cold as 9c in the winter

anyone see that program about the gulf stream that it could stop in as little as 20 years making the uk as cold alaska

Program?!?

Postby Knightshift » Wed Jul 07, 2004 2:18 am

I thought that was a movie called the Day After Tomorrow :P

But honestly, we've only ourselves to blame for it anyways, it's all cause from pollutants. What is serious on the other hand it the Polarity change that will happen within 100 years. Now I think that's gonna mess things up in the ecosystem.

Anywho, makes me glad I'm livin' down in Florida. Aye, the waves suck so I hear. But sure does beat the cold waters from Cali that I remember from when I was a child.
