Learning to surf

Postby Stone Fox » Thu Jan 05, 2006 1:53 pm

Hey guys. I've been surfing a couple of times and Loved it. I'm looking to get back into it, but I'd like to learn a bit more about it. I REALLY don't understand all the terms and jargon, and I know nothing more about surfing than just riding a wave in a straight line towards the beach and getting in everyones way

Can anyone recommend some good guides / dvds ? preferably without to much jargon, but one that explains the terms would be really cool.

Hi Stone Fox

Welcome to the boards.

The main 'Surfing Waves' site has lots of info which you should read through:

https://surfing-waves.com/surf_talk.htm

This should give you a start on some of the jargon.

Alternatively read through some of the posts on here, you'll soon get the hang of it.

Thanks

Surfing: A Beginner's Manual - Wayne Alderson and Surfer's Start-up: Beginner's Guide to Surfing - Doug Werner are two great books to read, they tell you everything you need to know.

Andy Irons has brought out a new learning to surf DVD thats suppose to be good aswell. Having a surf lesson is also a great way to start off.

Much appreciated guys.

I can get to my feet, and ride the wave towards the beach, but that's about it. I'm supposed to travel along the wave, right?

Practice this on the beach before you go into the water, an easy way of turning is - once you pop up and your feet are in the right position and arms out, look at where you want to turn (left/right) and slightly move your bodywith the movement , your heels should be raising slightly as your the front of your feet move with where you are looking. This will transfer your weight to the front of your feet to enable you to turn - and then to turn the other way transfer the weight to your heels and look where to go.

When you do it on the beach you can see the marks yours feet make on the sand when your body turns slightly in the direction you are looking to go.

Kinda hard to explain, would be easier to show you.
