question for beginners

Postby DanJS14 » Sat Dec 31, 2005 9:42 pm

i want to get better at surfing, so I plan on going a lot this spring. At the beach by me, even in the spring, it is always packed with surfers. I'm afraid to go to such a crowded spot, because I know I will probably just get in everyone's way because I am a beginner. I'm definetely not good enough to control myself enough to get out of people's way to follow the right of way rules, and have proper ettiquitte. What should I do. Every beach by me has this problem, so it's either I get in people's way and make a fool out of myslef or don't surf.

hmmm...

you are in jersey, right? well, I havent been to the beaches up there, but if its anything like Virginia, then there are uncrowded spots, because on any given day, ever wher there is a rideable wave. not good (hey, its the east coast!) but rideable. so, what I do when I get pissed off with the crowds, I just start walking. see a couple of people and a few waves, I go out. If the guys are jerks or something, just get back out and keep walking. Just because people arent there doesnt mean there arent any waves. look at mavericks. the best big wave in california, but nobody knew about it except Jeff Clark for 15 years.

I'm pretty sure you can find somewhere, good luck1

I only started surfing in September 2005, I dont care if I look like an idiot as long as I'm having fun.

Most of the guys put up with me, tho being a chick they're probably trying to pull me anyhow

It sucks when you see people lined up on the point and you're not catching waves. I think there's always ridable waves somewhere. Luckily, we go to this spot where you have a pass to get in or you have to pay. Weeds out a lot of people despite the waves are a bit soft there.

Just gotta keep you eyes peeled or go in the early morning. :-P

peace,

Lu

Fleshin' came out of a thread a while back, I can't actually remember how, but now those of us who have been around a while use it as a substitute for pretty much any swear/ curse word!

It's just impressive that Goody picked up on it that quickly!

Cheers

Back to the original question....beaches get very crowded in summer months and do make learning to surf difficult as you dont really know how to control your board yet. Surfers always (from my experience anyways) always seem to bunch up in the water in a big group....and usually you can walk down the beach a few hundred yards and there will be less crowd. maybe this is possible for you?

I'm lucky I live close to an excelent learner beach break.

To start off your gona be in the white water, where most experienced surfers wont go/surf, once your up to standing regulaly there, and turning some you can start heading out more with some control. You wont be there on big days, and prob best not to on packed days.
