Best surfer ever..

Postby welli » Mon Dec 19, 2005 4:58 am

Im from the 90's and I think Occy has got to have the best style ever and it is a tie between him and Slater for my best ever. Although K.Slater has won 6(?) world titles and probably is the best ever, I was reading an article at (www.northshore.com) that Andy Irons will surpass Kelly in the surf world as his best is still ahead of him..I dont know about that..

whos your best??

it depends on what you're talking about

you can't just say best surfer ever

kelly's deffinatley got it down with seven titles, but andy still rips and probally in his carer will tie if not top it, especally without any major competition.

bruce in my opinion is the best like, go for it guy, like I remember reading how he might only land one out of ten airs, but what he does is insane.

then, old school, tom curren and mark richards rip, and they still do, with curren trying to get back on tour.

tim curran is also amazing, along with occy, kinda bridging the gap between the 80's style and modern day.

dane reynolds is a wonder kid, he's gunna be better than andy and bruce when he's older.

shane dorian is psyco. just like, balls of steel, this guy is an insane big wave surfer.

but if it wasn't for larid, he probally wouldn't be as far a he was today.

jeff clark, who surfed mavs himself for 15 years can't be left off this list, if you're gunna do something like that, it kinda speaks for itself.

kenlea kenly(sp) is probally a better big wave surfer than most guys on tour.

then sofia mulonavitch, lisa anderson, chelsea gorgeson, megan abubo, all rip.

if carissa moore and john john were in a heat together, i'd be like watchign andy and kelly go at it, just riding five foot sticks, the stuff they do is so sick, they're unreal.

then we'd never be into the thruster age without simon anderson promoting his thruster design with a world title.

then everyone who's won a surfer poll award in the past has to be considered.

Then you got the loggers, like joel tudor, and kneeboarders, body sufers, wind surfers, tow guys....there's so many people out there...

so want to ask that question again?

If we're talking early 90s etc you can't discount Tom Curren. He was fleshin awesome in his day.

Also - he never wore a watch in any of his heats. I read an article written by someone who was surfing against him in a final in France. He said that the waves stopped with about 8 mins left in the heat, so they were all sitting there and suddenly Tom turned around and just started paddling off, the other guys were just watching him, thinking 'What the?' when suddenly this set appears on the horizon and Tom is sitting in the perfect take off point - he paddles in and takes off, the horn goes and he takes a perfect 10 to win the comp.

Awesome stuff!

Nobody's mentioned Melanie Bartels yet - so I will :D
I think she is the most surprising surfer to watch cos you just don't expect a girl to pull all those 'Brucey/Dane/Taj' moves, and yet she does  .

Ok been looking for a nice article to go with this; I have gone more for one of the actual pioneers of modern surfing; being Australian and a little patriotic would have to choose Bob McTavish... look over 60 and still goes hard....
