surfing with bodyboarders

i really want to get better at surfing before the summer, and I just learned that one of my friends bodyboards. I only went surfing four times, and can hardly stand up, let alone ride. We are both going to get wetsuits for the spring (i live in new jersey), and then we plan on going to this beach that has huge waves. Is it a good idea for me to teach myself how to surf, with a bodyboarder? Even if the waves are huge, is it smart? Or should I tell him no thanks, and learn how to surf with another surfer on smaller waves. But I don't know any others surfers, and I want all the practice I can get.

go for it ,good bodyboarders tend to surf steep heavy waves ,if you practise this from the start youll be riiping up in no time !

I don't fully understand what you are getting at....

1. Is it a good idea learn how to bodyboarder? If you want too it is.

2. Should/can I learn even if the waves are huge? Only if you feel confident and I would say guessing that you aren't particularly old, that an adult should be supervising you.

3. Is it smart to start surfing in huge surf? Probably not but who said you had to be smart to surf... actually you are probably better off in medium size waves under 5 foot.

As long as you are having fun who cares what your surfing or who your doing it with ie. body boarder, goat boater etc. etc. good luck, think smart and play safe...

Sorry mate if I insulted you... The language and format came across as though you were about 10 years old.

example:

I only went surfing four times = I have only been surfing four times.
... then we plan on going to this beach that has huge waves... sounds like a typical exaggeration of a young in; I was imagining this little kid dragging a board along the beach looking out at a nice 4 to 5 foot swell and thinking sh%t that is big.

I do feel that it may be a little big at 10 to 12 foot to learn to surf... where did you say this was?
