Surfing Wipeout

Postby surf patrol » Wed Jan 07, 2004 2:13 am

Taking a wipeout can be a really fun experience, but also a really bad one. The bigger the waves the more you get pounded.
The best advice I would give is that if you are going to come off in shallow water then make sure you go down flat - don't dive in head first or feet first. Faling on your back / butt is a good way of avoiding the sea bed.
Most important to mention is that if you are going to come off make sure you are as far away as your board as you can be. kick it out from under you or dive away from it (watch out for other surfers / water users when doing this) You do not want to be going round in the washing machine with your board ready to bounce off your head!
Hope your foot gets better soon and you are quickly back in the surf.

well most the time its best not let the wave carry u all way back to the shore or shallow water, unless ure getting out.

if there are some half decent waves paddling through them all to wait for a decent one is a bit of a mission. so when u catch one its best to try turn ure board into the wave either do a duck dive under it (quite risky for a begginer) or as u turn step off the board and catch it on ure side. the watter will be alot deeper therefor less chance of hitting the bottom doin ya foot in. you have a few seconds to catch back up before another wave comes then u should be further enough out to try catch another.

PS it does get very tiyring doing this for a long time, some times you dont realise how week ure getting. as soon as u feel the waves over powering you and knocking you too far back to get any rest. then lye in uer baord facing the shore and paddle in. one of the waves will prob pick u up do the work for you. have some water and a sandwich then get back out again

good luck

the scariest wipe-outs are when you get whirled round inside the wave, like you're in a washing machine. then you get up to the surface eventually, only to bash your head on your board :) can be fun, but usually just scary.

wipeouts

Postby yohja134 » Sun Feb 29, 2004 8:59 am

If you're spinning around like a washing machine, curl up in the fetal position with your elbows outside of your knees and your hand by your ears. This protects your head, and its hard for the wave to break your back or twist anything out of position. Only downside - rocks could hit your back.
If you're wiping out by the rocks, you're already screwed mate! This is better than nothing. :D
