Not sure about further along the coast (Devon, Cornwall) but for most of the south coast, 5ft on the bouys equates to about kneehigh on the beach

I usually only consider the south coast when the bouys say 6ft+

you taking swell direection into account as well ?

Oh yes!

There's gotta be a bit of south mixed with a bit of west :D

On the south coast (the mid-south coast that is), if the swell can get that far up the channel its usually more or less in the right direction, and you cant be too fussy on the south coast, else you'll never surf! :D

But Im feeling good about the south coast after last weekend's session :D  :D

dont forget the swell period

ive found if you get some solid swell moving up from the south of france with solid height and period you can normaly get a good wave on the south coast, this is the only time i would even bother checking the south coast
