Fins fins fins

Postby PipeDreams » Wed Jun 29, 2022 10:32 am

Whenever I try to find info on the FCS fin types I find the same old phrases, Carvers for point breaks etc etc and I fully understand the differences with the sweep, but I cant figure out how it will make a difference. Been running on glass performers for ages now but I have decided to invest in a set of performance cores, I live in the UK at a place that 95% of the time that it is not dead flat it is pretty small, but we get big Atlantic swells that can bring the waves slightly overhead a couple times of the year. My initial idea was to buy a set of carvers for when it gets bigger, and keep using the glass performers when it is small, or I'm considering meeting somewhere in the middle with PC performers or accelerators. Any fin advice would be much appreciated :D
(also, medium or large fins?)
Btw I run a thruster

If you "feel at home" with the Medium Performers, then I guess he recommends getting a Large set of Performers.

There is a fin primer which I wrote as a Stick here may give you ideas.
Just sent all my radical fins to France for my son's boards but I will do a photo for later when he comes back, do some sale bin diving at surf shops, see if you can get some fins to try without a large cash outlay.
BTW the fins that work best for you are the ones,

The glass performers please tell me you mean Neo Glass? lol.. because if not you are missing out.. if you are heavyish.. I reckon the weight of the surfer matters to size and technology of fin.. eg im 84/86kg and I like the Large pc or pc carbon fins.. when i pump off a neo glass on the bottom turn they bend.. but i'm a heavy footed skateboarder and i think surfer too if thats a thing.. all I can say is, bro.. get you some fins.. second hand ones and lots.. they make a huge difference.. not necessary to rip.. but bring different characteristics out of different boards.. those hs upright fins are top to bottom specialists whether you like to surf like that or not.. and on the cutty they draw tight.. anything bigger without a round tail and you go out of control going straight.. the fannings however allow you to ride a small wave board in reasonably pumping surf..

my top 5 fins are
toledos pc
performers carbon
Mr twins with trailer unsure what technology
amts keels in a twin unsure
HS fins carbon i think equal with fannings pc i think lol..

anyways.. fins are great.. and if you can afford worth it..

I have a set of the tannings in fcs2…..it’s like using a sharp knife….really precise and harshly unforgiving LOL. I have some am2 in futures and are go to fins. Anything with some rake really…..have a couple sets of shapers Lee Wilson’s that I love.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I ended up getting a set of neo carbon fannings which have been going really good, surfed the french beachies through that crazy random summer swell and now back home chasing the winter storms, and my surfing is better than ever. Getting new random fins to experiment :)
